Elks Give Best Shot
In 39-31 Setback
BY BOB SONDEREGGER
ARLINGTON-When the
Burleson Elks beat Arl-
ingto High in a stunning
56-53 upset Jan. 8, Richard
Miles scored 23 points and
Scott Metheny tallied 19.
Friday night, when the
Elks lost 39-31 to the Colts,
Miles was in Tucumcari,
New Mexico, having mov-
ed with his family out-of-
state. Metheny was far
away from being ready to
play after suffering a
severely sprainged ankle
Tuesday night.
BiHt the Elks fought hard
enough to win despite the
fact that three of their
opening season starters
were not with them.
The stuggle prompted
Elk Coach Robert Hale to
say his team “simply
played their hearts out I
couldn’t have been more
proud of them at any time
this year,” Hale said.
“I have never been more
proud of a team. I thought
we had a few mental errors
but they played their
hearts out.”
The Elks didn’t take a
back seat to anyone except
maybe the officials who
detected 16 Burleson fouls
compared to 12 by Arl-
ington.
T$e calls were a big
bonus for the Colts who hit
11 of 16 charity shots com-
pared to seven of nine for
the Elks. Ten of Arlington’s
14 fourth-quarter points
came on free throws.
For the record, the deci-
sion evened both team’s
records at 1-1 in district
play
For the record also, Arl-
ington got three points at
the final buzzer as John
Lewis and Arlington’s
Mark Childers collided
near the bucket as Childers
was going for a layup.
It was one of several such
collisions but this one hap-
pened at the bucket
Burleson was defending.
Also for the record,
Lewis fouled out with an
Elk high of 11 points.
Childers, who didn’t draw a
foul all night, hit the bonus
free throw for a 20-point
night, by far high for Arl-
ington.
Burleson delayed its of-
fense somewhat but
defense played a big part in
the low point production.
The Elks got the first
point as Lewis outtipped 6-8
Mark Bishop and Mark
Williamson took a feed
from Ken Nicholson to
score.
Bishop knotted the score
at 2-2 and Burleson turned
the ball over twice before

Eric Cameron hit a

6-4.
Arlington tied the score
before the first quarter
ended and went ahead 8-6
at the start of the second
quarter
Defenses and delaying
offenses prevailed until the
end of the second period
After Ken Nicholson hit two
free throws with 1:37 left in
the game to knot the score
at 8-8, Arlington’s seldom-
used full-court press paid
big dividends.
“We didn’t come out with
any intensity,” complained
Arlington Coach Dale Ar-
cher. “We had to use the
full-court defense to wake
up.”
They also needed it to
win. Burleson couldn’t
capitalize on the speed ad

Do Or Die
Time For Cagers
It will be do-or-die for both Burleson basketball
teams this week and if they DO IT, they will have to do
it away from home.
Both the Elkettes and Elks have one loss in second-
half play and need victories Monday and Tuesday to
stay alive in district races they are definitely incluenc-
ing.
The Elkettes will visit Arlington, a team that nipped
them in the first-half race, in tonight’s game while the
Elks journey to Arlington Sam Houston Tuesday night.
The Elkettes are 2-1 in second-half play and have on-
ly two more games remaining after tonight’s struggle.
Only one home game remains for the Elks who are
1-1 in second-half league play.
After visiting Arlington Houston Tuesday night, they
have a home game Firday against Arlington Lamar.
Next week it will be games against Richland Tuesday
and Haltom Friday at Birdville Coliseum.
The Elkettes have Thursday off and then host Arl-
ington Bowie next Monday night and Arlington
Houston next Thursday night.
No matter what happens this week, the Burleson
teams will still be a factor in the races
Richland and Haltom shared the boys titles in the
first half and Sam Houston won the girls first-half title
outright.

tion of Olympic expertise.
Figure skating exemplifies
the deceptive “looks easy”
sport. However, the experts
say otherwise. This sport
requires the agility, stamina
and grace of a gymnast,
runner and dancer—in one
athlete! Judges look for
good form. School figures,
like the figure 8, should be
perfect tracings. Hands
should be held no higher
than the waist. When skaters
take to the ice in pairs,
their footwork should be
in unison.
In speed skating, good
form is the means to beating
the clock. The skater in-
creases speed by lengthening
stride and crouching low,
towards a sitting position.

ed and Arlington wasn’t
hurt by fouls while coming
up with turnovers.
The Colts got two quick
baskets and shot ahead 14-8
at halftime.
Arlington had built a
21-10 lead before Burleson
began to effectively use a
half-court trap and turn the
momentum around.
The Elks pushed the tally
to 25-21 when Lewis con-
nected with 7:25 left in the
game. But the Colts hit six
free shots and a field goal
while silencing Burleson to
quell the rally.
Trailing 33-21, the Elks
came back once more as
Eric Cameron hit a pair of
free throws, Nicholson and
Williamson each hit field
goals and Mike Cummins
hit two free throws to nar-
row the gap to 33-29 with
1:36 left in the game.
But Arlington again went
on relief and got four of its
final six points from the
charity stripe. Burleson’s
only reply was a field goal
by Cameron
Lewis led with 11 points
and Nicholson and
Cameron each had six for
the Elks. Cummins and
Williamson completed the
scoring with four each.
Lewis led in rebounds
with eight, Nicholson had
six, Cummins had five and
Williamson and Cameron
each had four. Nicholson
came up with three steals
and Cummins had two.
Cummins led in assists
