shown in photo Tuesday night cheering his team on from the bench Scanlan uon
his 10th game since taking over the head boys basketball job at Burleson High with
a 54-45 win over Howie. The Elks will be home Tuesday night against l.amar.

MANAGING Editor James
Moody and his family, Don-
na Becker, and I were
among the sellout crowd
Wednesday at Reunion
Arena that witnessed anoth
er shocking Dallas Maverick
win over the w orld champion
U* Angeles leakers
All four games between
the NBA teams this season
have been thrillers The
Mavericks won two games
earlier on three point plays
by Mark Aguirre in the last
seconds of the- game and lost
a two-point contest on the
West Coast
Wednesday's game fit the
mold as Dallas won the game
on a shot at the buzzer by Jay
Vincent The last seconds of
the game were intense Dal
las had the ball with a scored
tied 120 120 with under a
minute to go but Kelvin Ran
sey pass to Orlando Black
man went out of bounds The
Lakers' Bob McAdoo took a
shot from 10 feet out but it
was blocked by Vincent and
the Mavericks had the ball
again with 22 seconds left
Brad Davis dribbled the
hall as the time wound down
and then took an 18 foot shot
that bounced off the rim to
Vincent in the left comer
Vincent let fly with one se
cond left and the ball
swished the net as the buzzer
went off The Maverick
bench raced on the floor as
the 17.134 fans rocked Reun
ion
THE LARGE sellout
crowd, the fourth this season
for the Mavericks was a big
difference in Dallas pulling
the two-point upset “It’s like
having six or seven guys on
the court with you,” Vincent
said of the crowd that gave
the Mavs eight standing ova
lions during the game
It's certainly true that a
large and boisterous crowd
can mean the difference for
the home team in those dose
ballgames in basketball
Which probably helps ex
plain why the boys and girls
basketball teams at Burle-
son High have not done well
at home this season and have
lost a number of narrow
decisions
The Elks were 2-6 at home
and 8-8 on the road going into
Friday's game against Sam
Houston The six defeats at
the Elk Pit were by one,
three, six, seven, four, und
six points The girls are2-5 at
home and have lost by two,
seven, nine, 14, and 17 points
Attendance at the home
games during the 1982 83
season has ranged from
sparse to nonexistent at both
girls and boys contests It is
fortunate, especially at the
Elkette games, that the play
ers have parents, younger
brothers and sisters, and
friends or else the gym
would be empty
There can lie several ex
planations as to why the
Burleson High students,
alumni, and other residents
have chosen to stay away
during the basketball sea
son One is that Burleson,
like many small towns, is a
football city Thai is true
enough except that the 1982
football games weren't very
well attended either
TIIK StHEIHI.E this
hoop season has had the Elks
playing all but one of their
games on Tuesday night ami
the Elkettes playing all but
one of their games on Mon
day night I'm sure most
people would rather go to a
game on Friday night or
Thursday night but one must
adjust to the schedule
It is true that neither the*
boys or girls quintets has
been in contention for the
district title this year but
nonetheless there have been
several well played and
many exciting games at the
Elk Pit in 1982 83 Among
them were the Elk's upset of
Haltom A3 39, the narrow-
loss to Sam Houston 55-51,
the Elkettes' inspired 58-41
victory over Trinity and
their 48 47 squeaker past
Richland
Burleson High had a vol-
leyball team in 1982 that had
six all-district players, one
all stater, and which posted
the best record in power
volleyball in the school's his-
tory But again the crowds
were miniscule even when
state champion Arlington
and district runnenip Bowie
came to town
It seems that Burleson res-
idents don't su|»j)ixt winning
teams any better than losing
ones to judge by the alien
dance at volleyball games
and tennis matches last year
and boy s basketball, w ith the
exception of two games, dur
mg the 198 1 82 season when
the Elks were in contention
for the district crown all
season
What a contrast to the
hoopla at Trinity volleyball
games, the big and noisy
crowds that always watch
Richland home baskethall
games, tlx- [jacked stands at
most home games in fmithall
in Arlington, the II K B sys-
tem, and Birdville
Then, what about the
35.000 people who [Kicked
Amon Carter Stadium in
Fort Worth to see the Cle-
burne Brownwood football
game’’ And the thousands of
Cleburne residents who
causeda traffic jam insoutb
central Fort W orth driving to
the game last October'’
II is often embarrassing to
cover a home basketball
game in Burleson and see
almost as many people on
the visitors side as on the
home side of thr- court It has
to Ik* a letdown to the players
and coaches and have a nog
alive impact on the outcome
of the game

ball and a state champion in
volleyball The nine team
district has also had teams
rated in the state in hoys and
girls basketball
It has been hard for Burle-
son. especially in football, to
compete in this mammoth
talent laden district It is ev
en harder when the athletic'
teams receive so little sup
port from students, parents,
and alumni
It surely is difficult for a
visiting fan from Haltom
City or Arlington or Hurst to
take Burleson seriously
when he sees only a handful
of people in the gym, often
not many more than the
visiting faas who had to
drive 15 or 20 miles to root
their team on
Burleson will not gain the
respect of coaches, players,
and fans in the other cities in
our district until the city
sheds its image as Apathy
Capital of the Metroplex and
begins to get wholeheartedly
involved in its athletic pro
grams It would make the
work of the players and
coaches a lot easier to make
Burleson's sports teams
competitive
It seems to me that many
Burleson residents i students
and non students alikei
spend more time and energy
making excuses about why it
is so hard for Burleson High
School teams to compete in
the district rather than try
ing to do something about it
The Elks will be home for
two more games Tuesday
against Lamar and Tuesday.
Feb 15, in the season finale
against L.D Bell The Elket
tes will end their season
tonight (Monday) against
Lamar The JV games start
at 6 and the varsity games at
7 30 on all three dates
