The comm unity service * in was
against alt non daily newspaper
competition.
This was a difficult (ask to
fudge; there wen' so many good com-
munity service projects here, ranging
from educating the public about
drugs to trying to get better jails/new
jaiis/ajad unit Every newspaper and
its staff should feel good about the
job they're doing. They were alt out-
standing on their own," the NETPA
judges note said of the community
service entries.
The Burleson Star wins fourth
place for its DARE project a com-
bined effort of the newspaper, police,
and schools to educate the youth of
the comm unity of the dangers of drug
abuse We looked at a lot of drug
abuse coverage in the community
serv ice div ision, but felt this new spa-
per did the best job of working w ith
other agencies and (.probably) pro-
ducing results, though admittedly,
the end result is a hard one to measure
here." the judges said
The winner in the community
service division was the Canton Her-
ald. It covered the struggle of a teen-
age boy and a community s move to
give blood and sign up as bone mar-
row donors. Second and third place

commending those who did make the
community a better place to live.

prise

ture category, for the Burleson Star
