Texas calendar of events available free
With spnng just around the cor-
ner. Texans from every comer of the
stale are rolling out the welcome mat
for thousands of visitors. Fun-seek-
ers will delight in the more than
1,000 sprintimc festivities, all found
in the latest Texas Events Calendar,
just released by the State Depart-
ment of Highways and Public
Transportation.
The quarterly calendar, span-
ning the months of March, April,
and May, is the authoritative list of
Gun, snake show set
"Something to interest everyone
in the family"' will be the atmos-
phere of the 4th Annual Brecken-
ridge Kiwanis Club Rattlesnake &
Cun Show Classic planned Satur-
day and Sunday, Feb. 24-25, at the
Stephens County Agriculture and
Community Center, located along
Hwy. 180 East in Breckenridge.
Hours for the two-day event w ill be
9 a.m. until "most of the people are
gone" Saturday, and from 10 a.m.
until 6 p.m. Sunday.
There will be one admission
price for all shows and booths.
"But don’t come expecting to eat
any rattlesnake, since no snakes
will be killed at the Breckenridge
show," according to Allen Jenson
and Richard Smock, project coor-
dinators for the Kiwanis Club.
The annual event has grown each
year and this year it will offer
musical entertainment, a beauty
pageant on Saturday, gift and craft
items, guns and knives, a carnival
with numerous rides, a 5-K run (2
p.m., Sunday), live exude animals,
and continuous, educational rattle-
snake shows and displays.
Snake handling and educational
demonstrations will be given by Mi
Mo Jo, The Snake People, of Fort
Worth. The snake shows will be
performed throughout each day.
The Miss Rattlesnake Classic
1990 beauty pageant will be held at
4 p.m., Saturday, with the winner to
be selected in a contest of girls be-
tween the ages of IS and 18. Miss
Rattlesnake Classic will not be ex-
posed to—nor requited to handle—
any snakes.
Texas happenings. From symphony
concerts in North Texas to
Shakespeare festivals in Odessa on
the West Texas plains, to zany
events for all ages and special activi-
ties just for children, the calendar
tells the where and when of it all.
Texans take to the great out-
doors with seaside festivities, open-
air concerts, kite-flying contests,
and sailboar regattas. Fun-loving
Cajuns stage fun-for-all events on
the Texas Gulf coast, complete with
crawfish races, French music, and
plenty of spicy Cajun foods. In May,
Cinco de Mayo celebrations offer
visitors a delightful south-of-the-
border experience with lively man
achis and colorful ballet fofldorico.
Spring blooms at dozens of
flower and garden shows. And free
self-guided (hiving tours through
rural Texas countrysides present
spectacular views of bluebonnets
and other colorful Texas wildflow-
ers during their blooming peak.
The information-packed calen-
dar includes air shows, an shows,
folk festivals, fishing tournaments,
and musical jamborees, and lists
weekend spring schedules for all
major amusement and water parks.
