Runoff election next week
With all the rain the area has had
in the past week or so. the word
"runofT probably carries more con-
notations of water naming across the
patio on its way to a creek than it does
to an election.
But, rain or shine, there is a
runoff election scheduled for next
week. In fact, absentee balloting
begins today at the Johnson County
courthouse—and Burleson sub-
courthouse—in both the Democratic
and Republican primary runoffs.
The Democratic runoff, with its
hotly contested race for governor,
has grabbed most of the spotlight
Ann Richards and Jim Mattox
square off ui that race for the oppor-
tunity to go head-to-head against the
Republican nominee, Clayton Wil-
liams.
Three other statewide races in
the Democratic Primary involve the
state treasurer's post, and one seat
each on the Texas Supreme Court
and the Texas Court of Criminal
Appeals.

level for area Republicans—the
Republican ballot will have two
races represented, one for agricul-
ture commissioner and one for land
commissioner.
Another race in the Democratic
primary runoff is generating some
interest locally. It's the one forjudge
of the 249th District Court Johnson
County Attorney Wayne Bridewell
will be facing Bill Anderson in that
one. In April, Bridewell had 34 per-
cent of the vote and Anderson gar-
nered 31 percent
Runoff elections ate open to all
registered voters who did not vote in
the other party's primary on March
13. It's not necessary to have voted in
the primary election to vote in the
runoff. Voters cannot switch party
primaries at this point, however. If
you voted in one primary in March,
you can't vote in the other party's
primary runoff.
Registered voters have until
Friday, Aril 6 to cast absentee ballots
in the April 10 runoffs. Under a 1987
state law that relaxed absentee bal-
loting requirements, voters need not
give a specific reason for casting in-
person. absentee ballots during the
extended period. In the March 13
primaries, about 15 percent of voters
Commissioners'
agenda short
today (Monday)
The agenda for the Johnson
County Commissioners is short to-
day with only four items on the
agenda before convening to execu-
tive session.
Among the items to be consid-
ered are:
—The 1990 census and redis-
tricting of Johnson County.
—Litigation: Johnson County
versus Methodist Affiliated Hospi-
cast absentee ballots.
"If you have made up your mind
whom you are going to vote for,
consider taking advantage of the ex-
tended voting period," said Texas
Secretary of State George Bayoud.
"It's real convenient and you can
avoid the lines on election day.*
Typically, runoff elections don't
create excessively long lines at the
polls, but the option to vote absentee
is still open to any registered voter
who wishes to do so.
