CARD OF THANKS
It has geen said that "The
greatest treasure to be found
in this world Is a friend." How
much we realise the truth of
this statement when death
came sc suddenly to our home
and took sway oar dear hus-
band and father. We appre-
ciate the help, the words of
comfort and the beautiful
flowers that each of you gave
and assure you that these acts
of kindness not only helped us
for the day but will continue
from day unto day until we,
too, shall reach "the end of
the way.”
May heaven’s richest bless-
ing abide with you.

Alvin Maddux, son of Mr.
and Mrs. Harland Maddux,
had two fingers and his thumb
blown off of his left hand Fri-
day afternoon when a shot
gun he was holding exploded,
the load coming out the side of
the barret where he was hold-
ing it
He was hunting near his
home east of Alto, and had
raised the gun to shoot at a
rabbit. Evidently there was
an obstruction in the barrel of
the gun that caused it to ex-
plode with the fatal result
above stated. He was brought
to town by Chaa. Murphy and
given temporary treatment by
Dr. McClure and then taken
to the sanitarium at Jackson-
ville, where the torn flesh and
mangled Angers and thumb
were removed. He returned
home Sunday and is resting
well at tMs time.
Toung Maddux has had
hard luck before in this way,
aa he lost the thumb from his
right hand some two yean
ago, it having been accidently
shot off.

IKIEIEST
By Mrs. Clara S- Ramsey.
Joaquin, Tex., Jen. 23.—A
most delightful hospitality of
the season occurred Tuesday
night, the occasion being in
honor of the joint birthday
celebration of Messrs. Slyvan
McCreary and Willie Savage,
our popular and efficient prat-
master, and rural mail carrier,
positions held by them for the
past several years.
The six o'clock dinner was
served in tke home of Mrs.
Savage, with Mrs. McCreary
as joint hostess. The table
was tastefully adorned with
snowy linen, silverware and
glassware and spring flowers
and laden with tempting food,
as both these housewives are
noted for their skill in the
culinary art. Old-fashioned
hospitality was featured in a
refreshing manner, aa large
platters of golden brown hot
fish was served first, with black
coffee snd corn bread, follow-
ed by bird pies, baked in the
old-fashioned way, (cobbler
style with plenty of rich milk
and butter). There were vege-
tables, fruit salad, lettuce,
pickles, delicious pies, fruit
and jam cake and layer cakes,
with variety of filling.
Covers were laid for twenty-
four. Those present, in addi-
tion to the honorees, the aged
mother and aunt, Mrs. Esther
C. McLeroy, of Mr. McCreary
were present, Arlic Harris
and bride, formerly Mrs. G, D.
McCreary and their family,
Mr. and Mis. N. P. Elba and
three sons, Miss Mollie Cham-
bers, faithful and long-time
employee at the post office;
Hugh, Audrey and Robbie
McCreary, Mrs. Fay Bebee,
Dr. and Mrs. W. A. Ramsey,
the family of Mr. Savage—the
"Boss,” as the rural carriers
call him: Sylvan McCreary
and the carriers are a con-
genial bunch and these get-
together meetings are annual
affairs and sometimes oftener,
as the occasion demands. In
our opinion, Uncle Sam has the
finest all-around corps of em-
ployees at Joaquin of any place
on the map.
