The Dublin Citizen presents..
School News
Important news and information from area schools
By Patty Hirst
DMS Newsby Patty HirstWith
only 20 school days left and the
enormous pressure of TAKS
preparation and testing relieved,
students, faculty, and administration
have certainly felt a shifting of gears
this past week. Everyone has been
finding his/her way back to
“regular” business at a time of the
year when that is very difficult
Ms. Lott’s 8th grade American
histoiy classes are covering the Civil
WarandReconstructioa They plan
to use their laptop computers to
make PowerPoint presentations
with information from these two
historic periods.
Math classes on that same grade
level will also be doing PowerPoint
with Mrs. Amick. The classes will
explore architecture and its
relationship with math by locating
buildings in the world that are not
rectangular prisms. Material from
each section will be combined for
the presentation and then students
will build scale models of the
buildings and calculate surface area
and volume.
Language arts classes in 8th
grade will return the novel, The Call
of the Wild. Students had put Buck
and his adventures on hold for a
couple of weeks in order to engage
in some very intense TAKS review
and have now returned to the Yukon
to complete the final two chapters of
the book.
Mr. Ivie’s 7th grade classes are
getting ready for summer road trips.
They are involved in planning a trip
to a Texas City and figure out the
cost for gas, food, lodging, and
activities.
Texas history students in 7th
grade are doing a study of ranching
in Texas, the oil boom, Great
Depression, World Wars I & II.
Mrs. Heaton is putting those classes
through the paces in these final
weeks of the school year.
Mrs. Swanson’s pre-AP classes
are finishing up their prose and
poetry notebooks, while her regular
7th grade language aits classes are
working on persuasive writing.
In 7th grade reading with Mrs.
Griffith, students will be reading The
Outsiders. Learning center will be
made and a project will be done
upon completion of the novel. “It is
a great book!” added Mrs. Griffith.
Mrs. Dowell, 6th grade math
teacher and Mrs. Wright, 6th grade
science, are working together to
create a physics type project that will
combine skills from both class.
This project will be on going as file
final weeks are covered.
In reading and language arts,
Mrs. Weaver reported that 6th grade
students will be working on poetry
notebooks, doing some writing, and
creating a movie review as they
work through this last bit of time in
the year.
Our student population has
remained very constant throughout
the year. There has been a steady
trickle of students coming and
going, with a few students checking
out and later returning to our system.
The 8th grade is the smallest class
with 83, followed closely by 87
seventh grade students, and the 6th
graders boasting 91 members as the
largest class. This brings our entire
student number to 261.
