the composite roofs with tin. If the
cost is substantially higher then
replacing the composite, a special
meeting will be held before going
ahead with those repairs.
The board also approved the
purchase of new playground
equipment for grades 1-6. The
new equipment will be ADA
compliant and will be replacing a
very old set-up. According to a bid
from Southwest Parks and
Playgrounds, the equipment will
cost $22,722.26, installation will
cost $6,311.01 and the ADA
compliant equipment will cost
$1,152.98. The ADA costs will be'
covered by the Special Ed Co-op.
Hughes said that the equipment
should be in place before the
Christmas break. A budget
amendment will be made at the
next meeting to account for the
equipment. Hughes noted that
most of the funding for the
equipment will come from the
Halloween Carnival revenues
over the past few years.

The board decided to hold a
public auction to rid of a lot of
equipment that has piled up
around the campus.
“We've got a bunch of junk,”
Hughes said. “There is stuff in
storage areas and in closets all
over the campus.”
Items such as desks, chairs,
office petitions, etc. will be sold at
the auction. No date was set.
“If we can get a dollar for some
of this stuff, that's fine with me,”
Hughes said.
Lingleville principal Susan
Haynes addressed the board,
reported that the school currently
has a total enrollment of 237
students. She also noted that there
were 46 students being transfered
out of the district, mostly to
Stephenville ISD, and 33 transfers
into the district, mostly from the
Dublin and Stephenville area.
Haynes also reported on the
students failure list for the first six
weeks. The summary indicated
that out of 199 students in grades
1-12, 23 students didn't pass at
least one course.
“This is the best we've done
since I've been here,” Haynes said.
Haynes noted some important
upcoming dates for the district as
well.

the Stacks of the Dublin Public Library
By FRANCES TURNEY
Oh, what joy and delight
await the unsuspecting reader at
the Dublin Public Library. New
and still shinny is the . latest
Alexander McCall Smith effort,
"Friends, Lovers, Chocolate,"
the second novel in Smith's "The
Sunday Philosophy Club"
series. More about Isabel
Dalhousie, Edinburgh's forty-
something-once-was married-
but-prefers -to-be single
philosopher and amateur
detective and editor of the
"Review of Applied Ethics."
More about Isabel's twenty-
something niece Cat and her
languishing admirer, Jamie, who
plays cello in the Edinburgh
Symphony and teaches music to
adolescents on the side.
In this episode Isabel agrees
to pinch hit for Cat for a week in
the latter's popular delicatessen
while she goes off to Italy to the
wedding of a friend. Cat assures
Isabel that Eddie, her second in
command knows the inner
workings of the place and will
be on duty during her absence.
At the deli, Isabel meets a
stranger, lan, and over a cup of
tea they become strangers no
more.
Ian confides that he is a recent
heart implant recipient. The
heart of a young man beats in his
chest and without it, Ian would
likely be dead. He has two
problems: he would like to thank
the donor, but is unable to learn
who it was; and, since receiving
the heart he has visions. He sees
the face of a middle-aged man,
unknown to him. The face has a
sinister expression. He finds it
disturbing. He is a psychiatrist,
and seeks a rational, scientific
explanation for this
phenomenon. Could cellular
memory be involved? Was it
possible the heart of the donor is
trying to tell him something?
Was his untimely death purely
accidental, or other? Ian, the
psychiatrist, needs help with his
problems. Isabel, the
philosopher, agrees to help.
That Isabel gets into various
degrees of trouble helping Ian is
what we expected. We just like
to have it spelled out.
Meanwhile, in a fascinating
subplot, Cat returns from Italy,
one of Isabel's favorite vacation
spots, reporting on the pleasures
of her trip and announcing that
she met an interesting fellow
there who will be arriving in
Edinburgh shortly for an
extended visit. Isabel ponders
this revelation with misgivings.
Italian men are so charming.
Surely Cat wouldn't marry this
fellow and go off to Italy
without due consideration. Or
would she?
Isabel's problems explode
when Jamie announces that he is
having an affair with a married
woman. Jamie is Cat's spumed
lover, but he is also Isabel's
friend, and Isabel is dependent
on his friendship,.she discovers.
All this and more, but Isabel's
ponderings are the best of the
book.
