lor the first time in nine
years, the Dublin Lions arc
headed to the slate football play-
offs.
The I ions had control of
their own destiny as they headed
to DeLeon to take on the arch-
rival Bearcats. Dublin quickly
put the game on ice as they
mounted a 28-0 lead in the first
half, then coasted the rest of the
game with mans junior varsity
players getting playing time,
giving rest to the starters.
They'll need that rest as they
take on a top IO-rated Jim Ned.
Thursday night at Gordon Wood
Stadium in Brownwood at 7
p.m. Thursday. I he pep rally
will be a 9:40 p.m. Thursday,
and downtown merchants are
asked to lly their Dublin Hags
and cheer the leant on its they
leave town Thursday afternoon.
The team went to
Brownwood Monday morning
to practice on the artificial turf
at a field which is the home of
the Brownwood Lions.
Dublin will be trying to be
the first Lion team to get past
the first round of play-offs since
1004. a team led by a number of
legendary players including
Richard I ruck Stevens w ho
played for Baylor and the
Philadelphia Ragles. In recent
years. Dublin has had a spotty
record of getting in to the play-
offs. although they have been
close on many occasions. Prior
to 1994. it was 1083 when the
team went to the playoffs.
The win over DeLeon gave
the Lions a 5-5 record on the
season and a 3-2 record in dis-
trict. They will assume the third
place role in the district and be
in the big school category as the
Lions are the biggest school in
the District 10A A.
Jim Ned is located near
Abilene and also has a large
enrollment.
For the second vear in a row.
Dublin dominated the game
with DeLeon. It has been rare
that Dublin has won over the
Bearcats two years in a row.
I bis game was dedicated to
Dublin Senior Carlos Avilez
who was injured in a wreck last
spring. He had been a coma for
a period of time. Now he has
recovered to the extent that he
was able to walk into the gym.
escorted by fellow seniors Ted
DeVries and Brian Keith.
DeLeon was winless on the
year and would have loved to
play spoiler in the contest to
keep Dublin out of the play-
offs. That was not to happen.
Led by a senior laden squad
headed by highly recruited and
probable all-state defensive end
Ted DeVries, the Lions took
control of the game from the
very first. Defense has been the
strength of the Lions t his year
with DeVries on one end. Rick
Lisso on the other and a quick
cadre of linebackers, including
Brian Keith and Harvey
Villegas and experienced down
linemen Tyler Dipple and Junior
Ramirez. Gerald Murphy.
Michael Kennedy. Jeremy
Crutcher, Jarred Jennings,
Derrick Herman. Derrick Simon
and Brett Fails.
The Lions also have a defen-
sive backfield that has a good
number of interceptions on the
year including Brandon Feist,
harley Pinckard, Joe Tamez,
Justin Carpenter, Ryan
Hammer, Preston Keilers, Scott
Harper and Chauncy Strube.
The Lions simply hammered
outmanned Bearcat team that is
down in numbers and will prob-
ably go down to IA next season.
Dublin took the opening
kick-off and picked up big
yardage on a number of plays
with Ryan Hammer, Miles
Stone and Scott Adams getting
big chunks of real estate. Adams
got the final four yards to score.
A try for PAT was no good but

seniors this year, Heather and
John. They have been great
leaders and we will really miss
them. They will be hard to
replace. Hopefully our 8th
graders can step up next year
and fill their shoes.” commented
Hickman.
TOUCHDOWN - Scott Adams got the scoring started early against DeLeon as he dashed through the
line almost untouched w ith good blocking for four yards and the I'D in the first quarter.
gave the Lions new life and
Adams went over for two
points, giving the Lions an 8-0
lead w ith 6:11 to go in the first
quarter.
The Bearcats looked like they
might get back into the game as
they drove form<their own 29 to
the Lion 15 before Dublin fig-
ured out how to stop them. The
Lions overran a number of
plays.
Moving from thier own 15.
the Lions moved down the field
quickly and scored on a 30-yard
pass from Stone to l ight End
Rick Lisso. Junior Ramirez,
added the PA T to give the Lions
a 15-0 lead with 10:39 left in the
first quarter.
The Bearcats next possession
ended with a Lion interception
by Harvey Villegas. A penalty
nullified a good run by Villegas
but the Lions had the ball on
their own 31. It didn't take long
for the Lions as Hammer scored
on a 17-yard run of more of his
almost 100 yards rushing for
the night to surpass 1.000 all
purpose yards for the year.
Almost 800 of that was rushing.
Ramirez added the PAT to
give the Lions a 22-0 lead with
7:23 left in the game.
Dublin got the ball back on
their own 4 and Stone did the
honors this time, as he darted
though the middle to the line
for 15 yards and the score. The
try for PAT was no good, but
Dublin held a 28-0 lead with
2:20 left in the first half.
On their first possession of
the second half, the Lions
moved inside the Bearcat 20.
but ran out of downs. DeLeon
couldn't move and a punt was
grabbed by Hammer at the
DeLeon 49 and took it in for the
score. The kick for PAT was no
good, but Dublin's lead was up
to 34-0 with 4:39 left in the third
quarter.
Dublin got the ball right back
as DeLeon fumbled due to a
hard hit on the kick-off. and
Emmanuel Caldera got the loose
pigskin for the Lions. That was
ou the Bearcat 22. A penalty set
the Lions back but on the next
play DeVries ripped off one of
his patented runs, tearing
through some defenders and
dragging the rest for 32-yards
and a touchdown. Ramirez
added the PAT. giving the Lions
a 410 lead with 3:30 left in the
third period.
DeLeon came right back and
on a broken play that saw the
snap go over Quarterback
Dustin Wright's head. He
scrambled, picked up the ball,
scrambled some more and then
managed to loft the ball to Cody
Hardin who broke a tackled and
tip-toed down the sideline for a
score covering some 56-yards.
The try for two points was no
good. I here was 8:10 left in the
game.
Dublin had another drive,
thanks to a 51-yard return by
Hammer and then James
Johnson and Nigel Gonzales
picked up good yardage to get
the I ions to the Del .eon 22.
