Church preps medical kits
Volunteers from First and local authorities, and then on to IJMCOR thousands as they are
United Methodist Church
in Dublin have made
personal Medical Kits to be
distributed in Haiti.
The group met Thursday
to sort the items requested
and to prepare the kits.
IJMCOR, the United
IVlethodist Committee on
Relief, a global ministry of
the United Methodist
Church will distribute the
Medical Kits.
UMCOR has trained early
response teams that
provide emergency
assistance in conjunction
with international, national,
Because of the connectional
nature of the church, local
congregations are made
aware of the specific needs
in disaster situations and
can respond quickly to
provide approved
supplies.
The kits contained a
towel and wash cloth, band
aide strips, nail clippers,
comb, toothbrush, and
soap, most of which was
provided by generous
donations and church
funding, The kits will be
transported from Dublin to
district collection centers
distribution centers.
UMCOR also accepts
donations of money to
obtain supplies for kits of
various types. During
Hurricanes Katrina and
Rita UMCOR and local
United Methodist Churches
prepared personal hygiene
kits for evacuees.
UMCOR has been known
for years for providing
“Flood Buckets” for victims
of flooding to clean homes
and businesses. First
United Methodist Dublin
compiled a total of 60 kits,
which will turn into
collected by UMCOR.
Outreach Chairperson
Annette Cleveland stated
that when disasters occur,
whether locally or on an
international scale, most
all want to help, but often
feel powerless to do
anything but send money.
Actually working - to
assemble needed supplies
that will touch individuals
is both rewarding, and
satisfying, as well as
providing what is critically
needed at the disaster site.
LINGLEVILLE
Cont’d from A1
"Most were concerned
about studentparticipation,”
Haley advised. “There were
none of their- concerns that
hadn’t already been
discussed in these meetings
at length.”
Lingleville will head into
football on an ‘outlaw
schedule,’ and Haley and
Hughes had called schools
to set up a preliminary
season and to make sure
they could find enough
schools to play.
“Not many schools wanted
to come over on a Saturday,”
Hughes said. Since the school
was foregoing lights, it was
necessary to schedule home
games during the day on the
weekend.
Even with that snag a full
season was arranged with the
Lingleville boys set to face
schools as Jonesboro, Bluff
Dale and Trinity' Christian
School in Willow Park.
An issue that has sparked a
lot of debate is whether to
hire a coach. There were
concerns at the previous
meeting that the school might
have to hire a coach with
nothing else to do while some
like Paul Moore (who spoke in
public comments) insisted
that they needed to hire the
best possible coach available.
Hughes allayed concerns
saying they had their priorities
for the position firmly in
place.
“We’re looking for a coach
that teaches English and
Spanish, then English, then1
Spanish, then Science ancKf
all that falls through we’jh
look at coaches with teaching
certificates,” he statedj^vd
rather have a sixmian
coach."
“Several young coaches
have already expressed an
interest and there is an
interest, among active
coaches,” Haley said,
indicating that it might not be
as hard to fill the position as
previously thought.
“Mr. Haley and 1 will find
the best we can,” Hughes
assured. “Now’s the time to
at least try it. I recommend
we have two years on an
outlaw schedule and then re-
evaluate it.

voting yes. Jay Procter voted

abstained.
“1 voted against it but I’m
behind you,” Procter said.
“Let’s make it work.”
Before they even considered
football in the meeting, the
board voted on some other
matters discussed in the
previous meeting including a
salary increase to help make
Lingleville’s pay more
competitive with similar
schools.
They unanimously voted to
increase professional salaries
by $1,000 and other staff by
$500.
They also accepted to move
forward with a three-part
building plan for a new
agriculture building to replace
the old one that is in
admittedly bad shape.
The first step will be to
construct the large shop.
Afterwards, the classrooms
and restrooms will be
constructed and the last
phase will be the construction
of covered parking for buses.
“1 hope to be in it by the fall
of 2011-2012,” Hughes
announced.
The construction was
unanimously approved.
They also voted to approve
paying the Maintenance Tax
notes used in remodeling the
stone building. Hughes
recommended using the
designated fund balance
since the interest rate for the
account is lower than normal
and considerably lower than

the interest rate for the tax
note.
All the board members
praised the package that
Hughes put together saying
that they were proud of the
choices that would benefit
everyone at the school
“I won’t be able to go home
tonight,” Hughes joked. “My
head won’t fit through the
door."
Hughes also presented a
preliminary plan to change
the policy on Benefits Leaves
and Absences. lingleville
teachers currently get two
paid days in addition to the
five paid days provided by
the state. After investigating
what’s offered by the other
local districts, Hughes drafted
some changes including
offering five days of paid
local leave with the employee
reimbursed for up to three
days at the end of the year.
The recommendation also
allows for up to 30 paid days
for “catastrophic” illness/
injury including those due to
pregnancy. A sick-leave pool
was also included where
employees can Volunteer
their sick days to others in
time of need. However, the
teacher would need to pay
the fees for substitute
teachers required in their
absence for extended leave.
Hughes said he would have
someone look at the draft
before sending it to TASB
who wanted to translate it
into "legalese." After all this is
done, the board will vote on
whether to accept it or not.
Jeff Brown and Jennifer
Carey also attended the
meeting to report on
delinquent tax collection,
stating that they were 94%
collected (highest in the area)
thanks to the windmills.
The meeting ended with an
executive session where
several contracts were
reviewed.
Principal Curt Haley’s
contract was renewed lor two
years with a 2% raise. Business
Manager Kay Hock’s contract
was renewed for one year
with a 2% raise. Counselor Jill
Edwards and coaches Janee
Morris and Brittany Mosely’s
contracts were all extended
for a year with step
increases.
