NEWS FROM THE
COUNTY AGENT
By V. D. Seals
Now is the time to check the
cribs and barns for the pres-
ence of rats. The Extension Ser-
vice of A&M College conducted
a very effective campaign to
control rats in 1951. Reports in-
dicate that rat3 are again in-
vading farmsteads.
There will be another cam-
paign in November on the 17
18 19 and 20th. Farmers should
notify the County Agent's Of-
fice if they are interested in
order that demonstrations can
be arranged in their neighbor-
hoods. White the County Agent
Box G89 Belton.
The County Convention of the
Bell County Farm Bureau was
held at the Auction Barn in
Temple Monday night Nov. 2.
Officers and delegates were el-
ected and resolutions adopted.

WINTER LEGUMES TRAP RAINFALL PLANT NOW!
Will the rains this fail and
winter change the blowing dust
on your farm to flowing mud 7
If so your soil may need weather-proofing.
The weatherproofing is a
blanket of green. This blanket
can be made of any close grow-
ing crop such as vetch winter
peas or one of the adapted
clovers. Or. if you don't want to
plant a legume any close grow-
ing crop such as oats rye bar-
ley or wheat will provide
weatherproofing.
You can see your County
Agent about this weatherproof-
ing job. He can help you select
the right legume or grass and
the proper fertilizer treatments
for that blanket of green for
your farm.
This business of producing
clean eggs is a real problem yet
there is a reward for the poultry
man who does produce and sell
; clean quality eggs.
II It's easier to produce clean
1 1 eggs than to attempt to clean
them afterward. Keening hens
fnside during wet weather to
.. prevent tracking mud into the
II nest. Frequent changing of lit
I; ter and the nesting .material
; ; will help too.
1 1 But in spite of good manage-
1 1 ment the average egg producer
;; will get some unclean eggs. Do
;; not wash eggs to clean them.
II The egg shell being porous
II may allow enough contamina-
:; tion to enter to lower the
quality. Use a buffer to dry-
clean the eggs thus avoiding
danger of lowering internal
quality.
Oscar L. Grossman of Little
River an ardent follower of
agricultural research offered
some interesting facts on his
1953 cotton crop to approximate-
ly 1500 farmers from over the
cotton belt who recently con-
vened at the Temple Experiment
Station.
The growers met to observe
the result's of cotton defoliation
research and see the perform-
ance of cotton harvesters in pre-
paration for going all out in the
mechanization of their cotton
crops.
Grossman who farms about
five miles from the Blackland
station has been a regular vis
itor to the station lor many
years. Since 1948 the first year
of cotton defoliation and ma-
chine harvesting research at the
station. Grossman has followed
the work closely.
The Bell County farmer told
the group he started spraying
his 1953 cotton for defoliation
on Tuesday of one week in ac-
cordance with recommendations.
On the following Friday he re-
sprayed with a plant dessicant
to eliminate remaining green
growth.
On the next Monday Gross-
man began harvesting opera-
tions and mechanically picked
16 bales. The following day he
harvested 20 bales and the third
day he finished that particular
field by sending three more
bales to the gin. The total was
39 bales of cotton in a little less
than 24 hours of actual opera-
tion. His total production was
46 bales from 55 acres.
Grossman's experience is cit-
ed as an example of the bene-
fits Texas farmers gain when
research information is followed
