The Ennis Rotary Club has part-
nered with the Ennis Public Library
and the Salvation Army to ensure
Ennis and Palmer kids have the best
chance to have a merry Christmas.
The Rotary Club is sponsoring a
public Angel Tree at the library,
from which interested donors can
purchase a toy and a needed item for
a child in need.
Ann Zembala with the Salvation
Army said the Rotary Club bought
the tree and decorations, and the
Salvation Army provided the tags
containing the children’s informa-
tion.
Zembala said Ennis is a good lo-
cation for Angel Trees, given the
need in the area.
“I personally interviewed fami-
lies, and 90 percent of the families I
interviewed were in Ennis and
Palmer,” she said. “The families
who come in are for the most part
working families.”

American Legion post focused on outreach
Ennis Daily News photo/Phil Banker
The members of the American Legion Post 361 in
Ennis are fixtures at veterans events in the community,
especially where Ennis Independent School District stu-
dents learn about the sacrifices veterans have made in
their names.

When it came time to show
the schoolchildren of Ennis
what it meant to take part in
celebrating Veterans Day this
month, the Ennis American
Legion was there.
Filing in to the assembly at
the Ennis Junior High School
auditorium to be present and
show students what a living
veteran of military service in
the United States represents is
just one of the ways the Amer-
ican Legion Chism-Landers
Post 361 reaches out in Ennis.
Post Commander Dan Cook
said the group aims to be in
the middle of activities for vet-
erans while promoting the U.S.
Armed Services and veterans’
issues locally.
Coming soon is a New
Year’s Eve dance fundraiser
that will help keep the organi-
zation flush with resources to
perform the host of outreach
efforts it runs throughout the
year, Cook said.
“That helps us to both keep
the post running and gives us
the opportunity to help out in
the community,” he said.
A few of the ways Cook
pointed out: American Legion
was integral in both fundraising
and organization efforts in the
Honor Flight program that sent
World War II veterans to Wash-
ington in recent years, the post
helped set up the 2010 visit of
the American Veterans Travel-
ing Tribute wall that memorial-
izes the lives lost in Vietnam,
they routinely offer scholar-
ships to local students for a va-
riety of contests including
essay-writing and oratorical
presentations, they sponsor
local baseball and Little League
teams, Boys State trips for local
highschoolers, lobby with the
Veterans Affairs and Rehabilita-
tion Commission for veterans’
issues and more.
The were also predictably
major supporters of Veterans
Memorial Park.
