Egg Rolling
Grew From
Old Custom
The annual White House egg
roll is a tame variation of an
Easter custom that used to
sweep the ancients off their
feet.
Nowadays the custom invol-
ves hordes of youngsters who
converge on the Executive Man
sion to send their eggs bowling
down the grassy slopes of the
White House lawn.
But in the days when Eng-
land was as hardy as it was
merry people used to roll them-
selves down a hill!
Eventually they tired of the
sport or its accompanying
bruises and substituted eggs.
