BIBLE NOTES
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
What does it mean to preach
the gospel of Christ? It is to
“preach the word, lad, preach the
word.”
The song reads, “I am not
ashamed to own my Lord nor to
defend His cause, maintain the
honor of his word, the glory of
His Cross.” We need as the Bible
says to “consider one another in
order to stir up love and good
works. Not forsaking the assem-
bling of ourselves together, as is
the manner of some,
exhorting
one another,
and so much
the more as
you see the
day ap-
proaching’
(Heb. 10:24-
25). Those who continue to
preach and teach those things
that are not according to God’s
word must be dealt with so as to
serve as an example to others
who would follow them in their
evil ways, and to maintain the pu-
rity of both the gospel of Christ
and his body, the church. This
can no longer be a matter of de-
bate. It must happen now, and it
must be done with great love and
concern for the souls of those in-
volved. In 2 Thessalonians 3:6 the
Bible says, “But we command
you, brethren, in the name of our
Lord Jesus Christ, that you with-

Another beautiful Sunday
morning. We were glad to have
Ms.Fancher back with us and
also the Finklea’s visiting. Aaron
was leading the singing, but we
will miss him this next week as he
is taking a few days off to visit
Andrew. I have heard that An-
drew has a busy week planned
for his brother. This is evidence
of brotherly love.
Aubrey’s lesson dealt with
“mis-matches” this week. Lead-
ing into the lesson, Aubrey re-
minded us of the mis-matches
that we observe each day. Some
of these we may think they are
mis-matched, but in reality they
may not be. Aubrey dealt with the
mis-match of how God chose to
take the most precious thing, the
most valuable thing, and the most
important thing to man, and have
it delivered to those who need it-
life or death consequences- by
seemingly the most inefficient
and unreliable method possible.
In God’s plan, it is a common ves-
sel, and earthen vessel to carry
the precious treasure. The trea-
sure is the plan of redemption and
salvation of man. The way men
;and women are to be saved!
What is a vessel? It is simply any-
thing that can carry something.
And earthen simply means that it
pertains to the earth and not the
heavens. Some examples: the
conversion of Paul (Story in Acts
9) though miraculously spoken
to ton the road to Damascus, by
the Lord himself, He was told to
go and see one named Ananias,
and there it would be told what
he should do to be saved. An-
other example: a man named
Cornelius was visited by an an-
gel in a vision. We all know that
not only would this be the salva-
tion of Cornelius and his house-
hold, but also the entirety of the
Gentiles. However, this great feat
was not accomplished until Peter
told Cornelius what he must do.
We could site so many more
cases, but the point is this. In all
of them, regardless of miraculous
circumstances, regardless of vi-
sions, or presence of angels, it
was man that God chose to de-
liver the salvation message. We
either stand in need of receiving
the message that man has been
entrusted with sharing, or we
stand in need of understanding
that it is our time now to be those
vessels Paul talked about, and be
up and about spreading the good
news.

draw from every brother that
walks disorderly and not accord-
ing to the tradition that he re-
ceived from us.” In 1 Timothy 6:3-
5 the Bible says:
If anyone teaches otherwise
and does not consent to whole-
some words, even the words of
our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the
doctrine which accords with god-
liness, he is proud, knowing noth-
ing, but is obsessed with disputes
and arguments over words, from
which come envy, strife, reviling,
evil suspicions, useless
wranglings of men of corrupt
minds and destitute of the truth
who suppose that godliness is a
means of gains, From such with-
draw yourselves.
O, brethren, the time runs
short. We all need to be encour-
aged to preach and teach the gos-
pel simply and powerfully. We do
not seek fame or glory; we seek
only to tell the old, old story of
Jesus and his love.
If I live to be a thousand, I will
never forget sitting there with my
grandfather in that hospital room,
keeping him company as he lay
dying and hearing those words
that still ring in my ears even after
all these years.

ery Christian has a heavenly Fa-
ther who loves to answer prayer.
In Matthew 7, Jesus was saying,
in effect, “Take the best earthly
father you can find - ‘Dad of the
Year Emeritus’ - and as good as
he is, he still has a sinful nature.
Yet he does know enough to give
good gifts to his children. Now,
multiply that a million times and
you’ll get an idea of the good-

family’s life and vitality were even
now being debated on high, and
see how wonderfully God will
answer. Someone has well said,

me word
WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURE?
By Stephen Wiggins Evangelist, San Augustine Church of Christ
The importance of repentance
is seen from the fact that it is a
prominent
theme
through-
out God’s
word. All
the
prophets
preached
a message
of repen-
tance. In
the Old
Testament
those of
Nineveh “repented at the preach-
ing of Jonah” (Matt. 12:41). In the
New Testament it was the same.
From John the Baptizer to Jesus
and his apostles every one of
them preached that “God com-
mands all men everywhere to re-
pent” (Acts 17:30). ft should be
no different today.
In these modem times, how-
ever, sermons are rarely heard
telling people to repent of their
sins. It’s unpopular. It’s per-
ceived as old fashioned and out
dated. It’s considered negative
and judgmental. We’re afraid
somebody might get offended
and not come back to church. It’s
easier to softt-peddle the gospel
with a little feel-good sennonette
while everybody remains slap-
happy friendly. Never mind that
sin riddled lives are dieing and
going to hell.
Repentance has to do with a
change of mind, a change of the
human will, which results in a
change of direction in one’s life.
Within the biblical context it has
to do with leaving a lifestyle of
sin and coming to God for for-
giveness. Sometimes people
make a change in their lives for
the better but never repent. I
knew an alcoholic onetime who
quit drinking when the doctor
told him he was going to die from
cirrhosis of the liver. This man
made a turnabout in his life when
he stopped boozing yet he never
repented of his sins.
Jesus said, “except you repent
you shall perish” (Luke 13:3). Un-
less a person obeys the gospel,
of which repentance is a part, he
or she shall be eternally lost. This
is why Jesus told the apostles to
preach “repentance and remis-
sion of sins” (Luke 24:47).
Nobody receives forgiveness
of sins without repentance. In the
first gospel sermon wherein the
apostles offered salvation
through a resurrected Christ Pe-
ter told his sin stricken audience,
“Repent and be baptized for the
remission of your sins” (Acts
2:38).
Don’t allow yourself to be
deceived into thinking you can
do otherwise and still go to
heaven.
The Bible says “repent or per-
ish.” What do you say? What
have you done?
The Bible is a book of prom-
ises. John 1:1 “in the beginning
was the Word, and the Word was
with God, and the Word was
God.” So we know that the prom-
ises in the Bible are made by God.
With each promise there is a con-
dition. Exod. 20:12 “Honor thy
father and thy mother: that thy
days may be long upon this
earth.” Eph. 6:1-3 “Children, obey
your parents in the Lord: for this
is right. Honor thy father and thy
mother; which is the first com-
mandment with promise; That it
may be well with thee, and thou
mayest live long on the earth.”
Deut 11:26-29 “Behold, I set be-
fore you this day a blessing and
a curse; A blessing, if ye obey
the commandments of the Lord
your God, which I command you
this day: And a curse, is ye will
not obey the commandments of
Lord thy God, but turn aside out
of the way which I command you
this day, to go after other gods,
which ye have not known. And it
shall come to pass, when the Lord
thy God hath brought thee in
unto the land whither thou goest
to possess it, that thou shaft put
the blessing upon mount Gerizim,
and the curse upon the mount
Ebal.”Matt 10:22;32 “Andye shall
be hated of all men for my name
sake: but he that endureth to the
end snail be saved. 32. Whoso-
ever therefore shall confess me
before men, him will I confess
also before my Father which is in
heaven.”John 12:25-26 “He that
loveth his life shall lose it, and
he that hateth his life in this world
shall keep it unto life eternal. If
any man serve me, let him follow
me; and where I am, there shall
also my servant be: if any man
serve me, him will my Father
honor.’’The one thing we are
striving for; eternal life is prom-
ised if: Matt 19:28-30 “and Jesus
said unto them, Verily I say unto
you, That ye which have fol-
lowed me, in the regeneration
when the Son of man shall sit in
the throne of his glory, ye also
shall sit upon twelve thrones,
judging the twelve tribes of Is-
rael. And every one that hath for-
saken houses, or brethren, or sis-
ters, or father, or mother, or wife,
or children, or lands, for my sake,
shall receive a hundredfold, and
shall inherit everlasting life. But
many that are first shall be last;
and the last shall be first.” Matt.
28:18-20 :And Jesus came and
spake unto them, saying, All
power is given unto me in heaven
and in earth. Go ye therefore, and
teach all nations, baptizing them
in the name of the Father, and of
the Son, and of the Holy Ghost;
Teaching them to observe all
things whatsoever O have com-
manded you: and, lo, I am with
you always, even unto the end of
the world. Amen.’’There are many
promises in this great Book, the
Bible. Study that you may receive
the promises contained there-in.
Roadcheck 2005
DPS troopers inspected 5,560
commercial vehicles during
Roadcheck 2005, which ran from
June 7 through June 9. The inspec-
tions found that 1,518 of the ve-
hicles and 200 of the drivers had
serious enough safety violations
to be removed from service.
The annual Roadcheck pro-
gram, which stretches from
Mexico to Canada, is designed to
reduce commercial vehicle high-
way fatalities through increased
vehicle safety. The Commercial Ve-
hicle Safety Alliance, which spon-
sors Roadcheck, reports a signifi-
cant decrease in the commercial
vehicle crash rate in North
America since the program’s start
in 1988.
Vehicles passing inspection
received a CVS A decal exempting
the vehicle from inspection for a
90-day period, unless they have
an obvious safety defect. Troop-
ers issued 2,726 decals during
Roadcheck 2005.
