Bible Notes
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
“Expressing Christian-
ity?”
The question is sometimes
asked.” How does a Christian
express his or her Christian-
ity?’ Often the person asking
this question is directed to the
gospel account of Matthew,
the 5th chapter, the Beatitudes
of Christ, and told to make
these characteristics or traits
their own. As they do this,
Christianity will be expressed
in their lives.
Others are reminded to fol-
low the example of Christ. (I
Pet. 1: 15, 16; I Pet. 2: 21).
To live as He lived; love as
He loved; be merciful and for-
giving as He was. Go be faith-
ful to the will of the Father as
Christ. (Matt. 26: 39). As we
do this, we express our Chris-
tianity. The Bible teaches that
if we are to “practice” a reli-
gion that is pure and undefiled,
then we are to visit the or-
phans and widows in their af-
fliction and keep ourselves
unspotted from the world.
(James 1: 27). The truth is, ex-
pressing our own individual
Christianity is a combination
of all these things and many,
many more. I read the other
day a small article that was
encouraging Christians to ex-
press their Christianity. I
found the article to be stimu-
lating and, I hope that you do
as well. How do we express
our Christianity? We do : In
the home ... by love and un-
selfishness.
In business
...by hon-
esty and dili-
gence. In
Society ...
by purity,
courtesy
and humility.
Toward the unfortunate ... by
sympathy and mercy. Toward
the weak... by helpfulness and
patience. Toward the wicked
...by overcoming evil without
compromise. Toward the
strong ... by trust and coop-
eration with good. Toward
non-Christians... by witness-
ing to Christ and His Gospel.
Toward the penitent ... by for-
giveness and restoration, To-
ward the fortunate ... by re-
joicing with them without
envy. Toward God ... by rev-
erence, love and obedience.
How do we express our Chris-
tianity? By letting the “light”
of Christ Jesus that shines
within us all illuminate the life
of all those around us. (Matt. 5:
14). By living in such a way
that our lives act as “preserv-
ing agent” to the world around
us. (Matt. 5:13). By living each
day in such a way that the
world cannot ignore the “good
works” that we do in obedi-
ence and faith to our Heav-
enly Father and come to glo-
rify our Father in heaven.
(Matt.. 5: 16).

Teachings from the Bible
Dwayne Sowell, minister_936-569-9840
There really is not a report
for this week.
I attended the sunrise ser-
vice at “Dock” and Fanny
Watson’s. As usual it was a
wonderful time of worship
and fellowship.
Don’s brother and his
wife, Jeff and Roberta, came
to Tenaha this weekend from
Allen. Don was in Oklahoma
City. We decided to have
brunch at Maggie and Gene’s
this Sunday.
I did not attend the Tenaha
UMC service. I have heard
there were a little over 40
people at the service. I heard
the Balkcom and the Peddy
families were well repre-
sented.
May God Bless You and
Watch Over You.

Seventh grade history teacher, Roxie Tate; Runner-up Danielle Mohr;
First place winner, Stephanie Stiles
The Shelby County winners of the seventh grade essay contest, sponsored
by the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, were announced at the April
meeting of the William Carroll Crawford Chapter. Danielle Mohr, runner-
up, and Stephanie Stiles, first place winner, read their entries at the meeting.
The contest topic was “The Texian Navies” and the winners, both students
at Tenaha Middle School, showed they had resarched this little known topic
in depth. They each received a certificate and Stephanie received a savings
bond for her winning entry. Their teacher, Roxie Tate, also received a certificate
of appreciation and a large framed map of Texas, complete with facts and
trivia of Texas history ,for her classroom.
Straight Road
Do all roads lead to
heaven? Does it really matter
which Church you attend?
People will not reach heaven
accidentally. Matt. 7: 21, 23
“Not every one that saith unto
me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into
the kingdom of heaven, but he
that doeth the will of my Fa-
ther which is in heaven. Many
will say to me in that day, Lord,
have we not prophesied in thy
name, and in thy name cast out
devils, and in thy name done
many wonderful works? And
then will I profess unto them,
I never knew you, depart from
me, ye that work iniquity.”
Matt. 16: 18 “ And I say unto
thee, that upon this rock I will
build my church, and the gates
of hell shall not prevail against
it.” Please not: He built one
church, not many. Christ
warns us there will be false
prophets. Matt. 7: 15,16 “Be-
ware of false prophets which
come to you in sheep’s cloth-
ing, but inwardly are ravening
wolves. Ye shall know them
by their fruits. Do men gather
grapes from thorns or figs of
thistles? If someone is teach-
ing things contrary to the
teachings found in Word of
God, or just teach part of it to
please men, they are false
prophets.
Christ prayed, in John 17;
II “And now I am no longer
in the world, but these are in
the world, and I come to thee.
Holy Father, keep through
thine own name those whom
thou hast given me that they
may be one as we are .” Paul
wrote to the Roman Church.
Rom. 12:16 “Be of the same
mind one toward another.
Mind not high things, but con-
descend to men of low estate.
Be not wise in your own con-
ceits.” Eph. 4: 3 - 6 “Endeav-
oring to keep the unity of the
spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body, one Spirit,
even as ye are called in one
hope of your calling, one Lord,
one faith, one baptism, one
God and Father who is above
all and through all and in you
all.” Where there is conflict
there is error. When you have
thousands of different reli-
gious organizations teaching
different teachings. All can-
not be correct. We have only
one church established by
Christ and He left only one set
of rules given by inspiration.
II Tim. 3: 16,17 “All scrip-
ture is given by inspiration of
God, and is profitable for doc-
trine, for reproof,, for correc-
tion, for instruction in righ-
teousness, that the man of God
may be perfect, thoroughly
furnished unto all good
works.” No, all roads do no
lead to heaven.
Matt. 7: 13, 14 “ Enter ye
at the strait gate for wide is
the gate and broad is the way
that leadeth to destruction and
many there be which go in
thereat, because strait is the
gate and narrow the way that
leads unto life and few there
be that find it.”
I Thess. 5:21“ Prove all
things, hold fast that which is
good.”
Study! Study!
Happy Easter to everyone. I
hope you were all able to wor-
ship the Resurection of Jesus
at the church of your choice.
We had such a lovely Easter
service. The choir wore the
new robes that were donated
by Durkee United Methodist
in Houston and we had a guest
soloist, Miss Brittany Bowlin,
the daughter of Patricia
Hooper, who sang our special
Easter music beautifully. We
had a wonderful crowd at
church and hope that those
who were guests will come
again. Pastor Loe based his
sermon, THE UNDER-
TAKER OF JESUS, JOSEPH
OF ARAMETHIA, on Mat-
thew 27 and 28. The heart of
the sermon was that if we
don’t join in on something to
serve the Lord we miss out on
his blessings. And we also
need to remember not to dis-
w
ire
count the gifts of thosearound
us and of our brothers and sis-
ters in Christ. The message of
Christthe Messiah is not con-
demnation, but of new life.
We had a lovely family game
night last week with hot dogs
and all the trimmings contrib-
uted by one of the Sunday
School classes. Next month
we look forward to a dinner
to be prepared by the men of
the church. Don’t forget to
tune in to the radio to heard
our church services if you miss
coming. Church Sunday
school if at 9:45, Church ser-
vices at 10:55 and Choir Prac-
tice at 6:00 on Wednesdays.
This week we have a meeting
for Bazaar planning on
Wednesday at 2:00 at the
church. Please feel free to
visit us anytime and hopefully
you will find a new home.
Have a blessed week!

ONE LUMP OR TWO —The third annual President’s High Tea
was held at the home of Dr. and Mrs. Gregory Powell on Wednesday,
April 9,2003. Mrs. Powell, a native of Australia, was quite at home
serving cucumber finger sandwiches, Earl Gray tea, and asking
“one lump or two?” The Tea at the President’s home was established
by Mrs. Powell to honor the Panola College Green Jackets.
Sponsored by Mr. Lynn Getsay, the Green Jackets serve as
Ambassadors at many college functions. Also honored were
members of Circle K International (CKI) the college version of
Kiwanis. Professor Brenda Allums sponsors CKI and Marc Wilson
is its president._
