YOUR SCHOOL --
By D. A. Swope
During the past several
weeks wo have been told by pa-
trons of thfi school that it was
their opinion that the athletic
program of the high school was
a money making proposition
for the school. Nothing could be
further from the truth. For the
number who participate in our
varsity program it is the most
expensive per pupil activity
that the school sponsors. Few
people know what the athletic
equipment costs and the amount
of expense that goes into the
program.
During the 1958-59 school
year the total receipts of the
athletic fund (which is kept by
Mr. V. C. Marshall) was $3523.-
15. Total expenditures for
equipment and injuries only
from this fund amounted to
$3529.70. In addition to money
spent from gate receipts the
Board of Trustees supplements
the expense of the athletic pro-
gram in many ways. During
the 1958-59 school year the
School Board spent from local
taxes about $3088.00 on 'ihe
athletic program. This is more
than they usually spend but the
bleachers had to be repaired.
Every year however they
spend about $1300.00 on the
athletic program. This can be
broken down as $1000.00 per
year extra salaries to coaches
about $140:00 for insurance and
about $150.00 for lights etc.
Few people realize what
equipment for just one football
player costs. The following is a
list of the equipment that we
have on hand and its cost: Hel-
met $14.00; rib pads $4.00;
two game jerseys $11.90; two
game pants $17.00; thigh
guards $4.25; game sox $0.60;
practice jerseys $2.65; prac-
tice pants $4.50; kidney pads
$9.75; shoulder pads $14.00;
insurance !j.UU and award
jacket $15.00. This is a total
of $105.65 per player. In addi
tion to the equipment that an
individual wears there is the
cost of wrapping tape the cost
of balls and other equipment.
In addition to this cost we
must suit out four complete
basketball teams of about 15
players each and 18 full base-
ball uniforms. A conservative
estimate of the cost of the ath-
letic equipment that we have on
hand would be around $6000.00.
The trouble is that this equip-
ment all wears out and has to
be replaced. This year all var-
sity helmets are being replaced
with new ones. Even during the
fat years when our football
teams were going to the region-
al playoffs the athletic fund
had to borrow from the board .to
buy the fine time clock that we
have.
Recently there has been some
misunderstanding about the in-
surance that the School Board
carries on the athletes. The
Board is not required to insure
the athletes but does so to con-
tribute to the program. The

Mrs. Elmer Saage and Mr. and

lace Lorenz.

of San Antonio are visiting Mrs.
Jennie Dillard.

is' visiting Mr. and Mrs. Albert
Daude.
Board's instruction to the ad-
ministration is tq apply the in-
surance when an injury occurs.
If the insurance covers all the
coat then everything is fine.
What about when it does not?
Then any family insurance that
the family carries on the ath-
lete must be applied. If this is
more than the cost then the
family gets the difference. If
the family carries no insurance
then the school pays the rest
of the bill. This may seem a bit
unfair to those who carry their
own insurance but unless the
injury had oecured thers would
be no insurance available to
anyone.
We hope that no one will take
the above article to be criticism
of the high school athletic pro-
gram. We believe that it is a
good program and necessary for
the youth of our community.
The purpose of the article is to
give you an idea of the cost of
the program.
