Butts are invisible? Do you
know what is funny about
cigarette butts? Me neither.
Yes, of course, smoking is stu-
pid. Even smokers tell you
that. But it’s the butts that we
are talking about here. While
cigarette butts might not make
you giggle, they do have some-
thing mysterious about them.
Correct me if I am wrong, but
it appears that many, many,
many cigarette butts become
invisible once they become
actual butts. Why else would
someone throw them on the
sidewalk? Certainly they
would not do this if they were
smoldering potato peels. They
(the smokers, not potato peels)
can certainly see them before
they become butts. They buy
or borrow them. You know,
those smelly smoke-and-
death-generating tubes of to-
bacco sticking out of their
faces like fat straws on fire?
Speaking of which, have you
ever wanted to grab someone
on the street and yell,” Hey,
you, did you know there is a
tube of smoldering stuff in you
hand?” You would add: “Oh,
no! Don’t do it! Don’t stick it
into your face! OK, well then,
what ever you do don’t take a
breath until some one can help
you yank it out of your
yapper! ” But then they smoke
them down into a little piece
of a cigarette that we
call(sigh) a butt. If smokers
like cigarettes so much, I don’t
see why they could not just
eat the little left over piece
after it cools down a bit. If ciga-
rette makers were smart,
they’d make filters that could
be eaten for a post-smoke
snack. Maybe something in a
peppermint flavor that would
give you ulcers. OK, the ciga-
rette folks are smart. They
have stumble onto a way of
making cigarette butts turn
invisible.. .at least for one heck
of a lot of people. This has
made them kajillionaires (the
cigarette people, not the
smokers) Do lots of smokers
really not see the butts? I
know you see them. I know I
see them. I particularly notice
them when I step into a pile
dumped in a parking lot. I think
some of the flickers do actu-
ally see the butts, if
briefly.That’s why they stomp
on them.This, then, makes
them extra invisible... particu-
larly when ground into your
driveway or patio. “ what if,
we saw cigarette butts as a
metaphor for all those little
sins we pay hardly any atten-
tion to?

Who are these people???
Thank you one and all. During Frontier Days a lot of tickets
were sold and everyone wanted to win. But only 4 lucky people
held the winning tickets. They were LaNell Strahan, Bruce
Samford, Mike Thrift and Bobby.
The Timpson Volunteer Ambulance Service would like to thank
the following friends for helping with our fundraiser. Every

Most taxpayers already have
filed their tax year 2003 federal
income tax returns. But for almost
8.5 million taxpayers who opted
for the automatic extension of
time to file, the deadline is Au-
gust 16.
The IRS reminds extension fil-
ers that e-filing remains available.
So far this year, more than 60 mil-
lion returns have been e-filed.
“Why not e-file? More than
60 million Americans already
have,” said IRS Commissioner
Mark W. Everson. “No matter
what time of the year, e-filing is
the fastest, safest, easiest way to
do taxes. There are fewer errors,
and taxpayers get their refunds
in less than half the time of paper
returns.”
The Internal Revenue Service
reminds taxpayers with exten-
sions to file their returns by Au-
gust 16 to avoid the late filing
penalty, which is 5 percent per
month of the unpaid tax. Help may
be available, however, for people
who cannot file by August 16.
Taxpayers with special cir-
cumstances, such as a hardship,
that prevent them from preparing
and filing their tax forms by Au-
gust 16 may request an additional
two-month extension by com-
pleting Form 2688, giving them
until October 15 to file their in-
come tax returns.
These taxpayers will be

granted an extension of time to
file even if they cannot send in
payment of outstanding 2003
taxes with the extension request.
Taxpayers granted the addi-
tional time to file will not be pe-
nalized for late payment of tax if
they pay the balance of their 2003
tax when they file the tax return
by October 15, provided 90 per-
cent of their total tax was paid by
April 15. However they will owe
interest on any taxes not paid by
April 15.
To request the additional time
to file, taxpayers must file Form
2688 with the IRS by August 16.
Fonn 2688 is available on the IRS
Web site, IRS.gov. Fonn 2688 can
be filed electronically or mailed
to the IRS.

BACK TO SCHOOL
eans kids are always on the go.
Be really careful for them -
they are excited and happy
and not always watching out!
Bussey Drug
254-2471 Your Hometown Pharmacy
The kids are returning to school in Shelby
County and we urge all of you to watch
carefully when the bells start ringing again.
The youngsters will be on the crosswalks,
unloading from buses and cars and not at all
interested in safety, so it’s up to you, the
adult, to watch out for them.
You can remember to take
advantage of the Tax Free
days for shopping this
weekend and buy all the
things you need to prepare
your kids for school, rather
it is clothing or supplies.
Have a great year in 2004-2005 and help the
kids to enjoy staying safe.
