Bible Notes
By Mark Sloan, Minister, Carthage Church of Christ
“We have a very difficult situ-
ation. A Christian married
couple has filed for divorce. For
some time the husband has been
cheating on his wife with an
Internet affair. She has caught
him many times on pornographic
sites. He now refuses to repent
and is unwilling to stay married.
We are confused over the mean-
ing of the Greek word in Mat-
thew 19 (and other passages). If
they divorce, can the wife re-
marry on the grounds of sexual
sin? She does not want to gamble
with her soul.”
“And I say unto you, Who-
soever shall put away his wife,
except it be for fornication,
and shall marry another,
committeth adultery” and
whoso marrieth her which is
put away doth commit adul-
tery.” (Matt. 19: 9, KJV).
The Greek word here is
TTOPVE LA. It can simply
be defined as sexual sin. From
it comes the English word,
“pornography.” The King
James Version translates this
best and most directly. Jesus
says that sexual sin on the part
of one person is a cause for
divorce. In the case of divorce
for sexual sin, the injured party
(the one innocent) is free to
marry without the guilt of adul-
tery being attached to the sec-
ond union.
Mark Sloan
The issue I
is whether
or not an af-
fair over the
Internet isl
sexual sin,
or fornica-l
tion! Only|
the individu-
als involved
know the extent of the affair,
of the amount or nature of the
sexual behaviors that were in-
volved. As a result, only they
can determine if the husband
you describe was guilty of
sexual sin or fornication. If I
were a member of your con-
gregation I believe that I
would trust the wife and al-
low her to determine if her
husband is guilty of sexual sin
or fornication, since she is the
only one who is in a position
to really know. Since the hus-
band is unwilling to repent, the
issue is in her hands. Once
she has decided, I would sup-
port her in her decision.”

Teachings from the Bible

John 13:35 “By this all men
know ye are my disciples, If
you love one another.” John
14: 15 “If you love me, keep
my commandments. “ John 3:
16 “For God so loved the
world that He gave His only
begotten Son, that whosoever
believeth in Him should not
perish, but have everlasting
life.” Love is the most used
word in the Bible. That being
said, I think it goes without
saying. We must have love for
our fellow man. Then what is
love?
I Cor. 13: 3-8 “And though
I bestow all my goods to feed
the poor, and though I give my
body to be burned, and have
not charity (love), it profiteth
me nothing. Charity (love)
suffereth long and is
kind
“And now abideth faith, hope,
charity, these three, but the
greatest of these is charity.”
Matt. 5 : 44 “But I say unto
you, Love your enemies, bless
them that curse you, do good
to them which despitefully use
you, and persecute you.” I
John 4: 20 - 21 “If a man say,
I love God, and hateth his
brother, he is a liar, for he that
loveth not his brother whom
he hath seen, how can he love
God whom he hath not seen.
And this commandment have
we from him, That he who
loveth God love his brother
also.”
Do vou have love?

Timpson Area History Book
July 1st the Book Committee held the monthly meeting re-
viewing the progress made toward submitting all the data to the
publisher. We are aware that many individuals are inquiring
about when the finished book will be available and the commit-
tee is targeting for it to be available by sometime in December
2003, in time for Christmas.
Many people have been working diligently and regularly to-
ward getting this history book project completed as soon as
possible.
The scope of the book includes the history of about 330 fam-
ily stories, the City of Timpson, businesses, schools, churches
etc., and the history on 55 surrounding communities, etc.
Individuals interested in placing an order for this book, the
pre-publication price is $75 plus $10 for handling and shipping.
To order call 936-254-3500.
Thank you, George T. Green

"OwnedBy Those We Serve"
TENAHA FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
By Martha Brennion-Nease
Tenaha First United Method-
ist Church met Sunday, July
20th. The regular service
times on Sunday are Sunday
School at 10:00 am. Bob Davis
and George Bowers alternate
leading the Adult Sunday
School class. The Worship ser-
vice is at 10:45 am.
The introit for the day was
“There’s Something About
That Name”. The hymns for
the day were “This Is The
Day”, “O How I Love Jesus”,
“Higher Ground” and “Turn
Your Eyes Upon Jesus”. The
Special Music by the choir was
“When The Roll Is Called Up
Yonder”. Maggie and Gene
Casto continue to be joining us
in the choir. We sang Happy
Anniversary to Laura &
George Bowers. We had 28
present to hear the sermon.
The sermon “Dancing Before
God” came from II Samuel 6:
1-19. If we are fully im-
mersed in worshiping the Lord
we will not care about others
approval of how we worship.
To worship is not a passive ac-
tivity - to worship is to change.
We missed some of our regu-
lar worshipers, such as the
Clifton Family, Walter & Jean
Peddy, and the Readers. We
did have others filling their
spaces. It was great to have
Charles & Karol Weeks. I
was really a surprise to have
Emily & Ron Viskowsky visit-
ing with us. It is always won-
derful to share worship with
some you have not shared with
in a long time. Remember the
pastor’s challenge to pray con-
sistent, insistent, persistent, and
not selfish over one thing for
the next 45 days. He wants to
know if that one prayer is an-
swered at the end of the 45
days. He reminded us to not
change the prayer, such as
one day praying for rain and
the next day praying for sun-
shine. Take up the challenge.
If you started Sunday July 6th
your 45 days would go until
Wednesday, August 20th, if
you start Thursday, July 10th,
your 45 days would go until
Sunday, August 24th. Re-
member sometimes the an-
swer to a prayer is No. The
Tenaha UMC Ladies meet
on Tuesday mornings at
10:00 am. Leslie and Katie
Bradley have been joining
the ladies meeting. Some of
the ladies continue to work on
this year’s quilt. They hope
to put it on display at local
businesses when it is com-
pleted. We want everyone
to see it and have the oppor-
tunity to buy raffle tickets.
The Tenaha First United
Methodist Church web site
address is <http://
gbgmchurches.gbgm-
umc.org/tenaha/>. We have
a growing prayer list for
members of our congrega-
tion, their families, friends and
members of the community.
Field’s Chapel Church, lo-
cated between Palestine &
Rusk remains on our list. The
church building was de-
stroyed by arson. Anyone
may be added or removed
from the list simply by a re-
quest to our pastor, Brother
Jim Bradley or Jean Ballard
(she helps with the bulletins).
The PRAYER LIST is
printed on the back of each
week’s bulletin. If you did not
attend church for any reason
but would like a copy of the
bulletin leave a message on
the church answering ma-
chine 248-2246. A bulletin can
be mailed to you or delivered.
