America’s Game: Detroit and St. Louis are all locked up in a World Series game of baseball, a
game that to most people is as American as apple pie or Independence Day. Where did the game come
from and how did it get started?
Most written records state that the first baseball game in history was played at the Elysian Fields
in Hoboken, New Jersey, on June 19th, 1846, between the New York Nine and the Knickerbocker
Baseball Club. In 1907 a commission established to investigate the origins of the game declared
categorically that it had been invented in 1839 by an American general named Abner Doubleday in
Cooperstown in upstate New York.
But much evidence suggests that baseball originated much earlier—in Europe.
A game called base ball is referred to by Jane Austen in her novel Northanger Abbey, published in
1818. And a woodcut illustrating John Newbery’s English children’s book A Little Pretty Pocket-
Book (1744) reveals that a ball game involving bases was being played in England even earlier in the
18th century.
Many early games, in fact, involved the use of bats and balls and running between different kinds
of bases. One such game became formalized as rounders, first described in detail in William Clarke’s
The Bov’s Own Book, published in 1828. And in Ball. Bat and Bishop, a history of the origin of ball
games, a connection between rounders and baseball is established fairly conclusively.
But it may be that rounders and baseball, as well as cricket, are all derived from a game that dates
back to even earlier times. In a manuscript dating from about 1344, monastic players seem to be
watching a team member prepare to hit a ball, which a man is about to toss. Some historians think
they are playing an early form of baseball.

Title: The Rescue Author: Nicholas Sparks
Here, in his newest work, Sparks tells a story about making the greatest commitment of all... loving
someone forever.
When confronted by raging fires or deadly accidents, volunteer fireman Taylor McAden feels
compelled to take terrifying risks—risks no one else in the department would ever take—to save
lives. But there is one leap of faith Taylor can’t bring himself to make: He can’t fall in love. For all
his adult years, Taylor has sought out women who need to be rescued, women he leaves as soon as
their crisis is over, as soon as the relationship starts to become intimate.
Then, one day, a ragging record-breaking storm hits his small Southern town. Denise Holton, a
young single mother, is driving through it when her car skids off the road. With her is her four-year-
old son, Kyle, a boy with severe learning disabilities and for whom she has sacrificed everything.
Unconscious and bleeding, she—but not Kyle—will be found by Taylor McAden. And when she
wakes, the chilling truth becomes clear to both of them: Kyle is gone.
During the search for Kyle, the connection, the lifeline, between Taylor and Denise takes root.
Taylor doesn’t know that this rescue will be different from all the others, demanding far more than
raw physical courage. That it will lead him to the possibility of his own rescue from a life lived
without love. That it will require him to open doors to his past that were slammed shut by pain. That
it will dare him to live life to the fullest by daring him to love.
In The Rescue Nicholas Sparks weaves his inimitable spell, immersing us in the passions and the
surprising complexities of modern relationships—and in doing so, teaching us something about our
own.

Title: The Second Time Around
Author: Mary Higgins Clark
In a novel that reaffirms her reputation as “America’s Queen of Suspense,” Mary Higgins Clark
delivers a gripping tale of deception and tantalizing suspense.
Nicholas Spencer, charismatic head of the medical research company Gen-stone, involved in the
development of an anticancer vaccine, suddenly disappears. His private plane crashes en route to
Puerto Rico, but his body is not found.
Early results of the vaccine seemed highly promising. Yet, coinciding with Nicholas Spencer’s
disappearance comes news that the FDA is denying approval. Then follows the shocking revelation
that Spencer had looted Gen-stone of huge sums of money—including the lifetime savings of people
who had risked every penny they had.
Marcia “Carley” DeCarlo, the thirty-two-year-old columnist for the Wall Street Weekly, is as-
signed to cover the story. Carley is the stepsister of Spencer’s wife, Lynn, an aggressive PR woman
and socialite, whom she dislikes and distrust.
The day after news of her husband’s disappearance rocks the financial and medical world, Lynn
attends a meeting of the stockholders of Gen-stone, flaunting ex-
pensive clothing and jewelry. Accused of having participated in
the scam, she appears indifferent to the anger and despair of the
people attending, among them a man whose child has cancer and
who is now about to lose his home. That night, she narrowly es-
capes death when her mansion in Bedford, New York is set on fire.
She turns to Carley, begging her to use her investigative skills to
prove that she was not her husband’s accomplice.
As Carley proceeds with her investigation she is confronted by
seemingly impenetrable questions: Is Nicholas Spencer dead or in
hiding? Was he guilty or set up? Why the sudden reversal in
medical opinion of the vaccine from recognition to condemnation?
And as the facts begin to unfold, she becomes the target of a dan-
gerous group involved in s sinister and fraudulent scheme.
This is a story that intertwines fiction with the stuff of real-life
headlines in a novel of breathtaking suspense and surprises.

RAMAH NEWS
By Charity Arwine
Hello from the Ramah Com-
munity. Sunday was bright and
chilly. It was nice seeing every-
one after being out one Sunday.
You don’t realize how much you
miss everyone’s smiling faces
until you don’t for almost two
weeks. Well I did and I’m glad
to be back...
John and Lich Pilkington
celebrated their 33rd anniver-
sary. There weren’t any birth-
days. Chastity, Jeremy and their
children were in visiting for the
weekend.
Justin and Leslie finally
tied the knot. The ceremony was
very pretty and there were a
good number of family and
friends in attendance. Teagan
(Chastity and Jeremy Overby’s
oldest daughter) and Aidan
(Ryan and Charity Arwine’s old-
est son) were supposed to be the
flower girl and ring bearer but
at the last minute Aidan decided
that he didn’t like the black
“church” pants. Luckily we
have lots of others to choose
from. Fifteen minutes before the
wedding began, I was driving
my spoiled but sweet child back
to the house to exchange him for
his easy-going cousin, Blaine to
do the job. He did a wonderful
job if I do say so myself. Thank
you Blaine and sorry Justin and
Leslie. Anyway, the wedding
and reception turned out nicely
and I wish Mr. and Mrs.
McGuire a future filled with
happiness.
This busy month is more
than half way through but we
still have so much left to do.
Saturday, October 28, will be
our annual Walk of F aith and the
time change. Sunday, Oct. 29,
evening worship will be our fifth
Sunday singing. Monday, Oc-
tober 30, is the district brother-
hood meeting at RBC and it be-
gins at 7 p.m. October 31 at 7
p.m. is our Fall Festival for the
young and the young at heart.
Come fellowship and praise the
Lord for another beautiful sea-
son.
We need to continue remem-
bering everyone on the prayer
request list. Kendal McDonald
was added because of his heart
and John Smith because of his
up coming surgery. Please con-
tinue to remember these in your
prayers. We also need to re-
member the Tammy Riley fam-
ily and the Douglas Barton fam-
ily. Remember: God is Good!
