LETTER—Dear Folks:
Thanks so very much for the
wonderful job you did with the
cemetery article. Also for the pub-
licity for the Veterans Day pro-
gram.
The nice picture and write-up
by my beautiful neighbor, Eliza-
beth. We really do want the pic-
tures of those who serve our great
nation. She was right, I had the
pictures up for the Gulf War ser-
vice personnel.
I remember so well when a kid
of 18-years I left for North Af-
rica. Ed and Bill Wall took all
the merchandise out of their dis-
play windows at Wall Drug Co.
and placed the pictures of our
fighting men that were all over the
world. I can remember how proud
mothers and dads were to have
their sons and daughters pictures
placed so everyone could see and
be proud of them. Of course as
the "ole pro knows, you didn't hear
from your service people except
about once a month or longer.
Looking back now, I don't see
how parents handle it. They were
just stronger and I'm sure closer
to the Lord.
I told them last night at church
that when our ground forces go
into combat there will be Sgt.
Yorks and AudieMurpheys just
like it was in WW I and WW II,
and that creditable group that
fought in Korea (like our Mayor)
who was a machine-gunner and
those of Vietnam and Desert
Storm.
Anyway, thanks again for the
excellent coverage. OH YES...I
read every word of "Tales of Two
Cities.— Albert Bums
Thank you, sir. The“Tales”
column is just a way to keep our
communities together and in-
formed of what's happening in
our own down home style. Ap-
preciate all your comments. Ed.

VETS SALUTE—What a
wonderful gathering at Timpson
and Tenaha to pay homage to our
service men past and present.
There were smiling faces to greet
us and some we had not seen for
some time. Ruth Tyson was
there with Col. John and she
looked so great. Was happy to see
Maydelle Burns and many oth-
ers I haven’t seen in a while. The
program was good. Red
Whiteside does a fine jjob every
year. District Judge Charles
Mitchell was there (without
LW(lovely wife) and Carolyn
Golden, County Treasurer. I
missed Dock Watson and
Fannie, but I know they were
someplace in the County saluting
veterans. They were over in
Tenaha Sunday morning early. We
were all especially proud to be re-
membering our vets this year since
there are other young men in an-
other place and another time de-
fending our wonderful land. God
Bless our veterans and our
Country.

Capitol Comment by Kay Bailey Hutchison U.S. Senator
Aviation Security
“These are the times that try men’s souls. The summer soldier and
the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of their
country; but he that stands it now, deserves the love and thanks of man
and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have
this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more glorious
the triumph. What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly; it is
dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to
put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so
celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.”

I Doug’s Doodles
| By Doug Reeh
February, 2,1943, four days out
from Staten Island in the north
Atlantic, on a troop ship with ap-
proximately 5000 other dog faced
G.I.’s. It’s the middle of the night
when alarms go off that would
wake the dead. Of course, we
assumed the ship had been torpe-
doed. It was already listing to the
starboard when a voice over the
loudspeaker ordered us on deck.
Calmly, and in military fashion, we
did as we were told.
There was little conversation as
my mind flashed back to movie
scenes I remembered of sinking
ships that sucked everything near
them into the deep as they went
down. I told myself, when we
were ordered to abandon, I would
swim away from the wreckage
until I was totally exausted. As it
were, after about an hour, we
were chilled to the bone when our
company commander came and
told us the ship's captain had sur-
veyed the damage where an ad-
jacent tanker in the convoy had
failed to zig properly and had
rammed our ship. It was not all
that comforting when he quoted
the captain as saying, he thought!
he could keep us afloat.
Obediently, although they were
three decks down, we returned to
our quarters where there wasn't
much sleeping, but much praying
going on. Apparently, the Lord
was listening, he gave us three
beautiful bright sunshiny days to
get to the Bermuda Isles where,
after eighteen days of deep sea
fishing, lolly gaging on the beach
and some friendly repartee with
the natives, another ship arrived
and and it was off to Casablanca.

Things you can live without knowing if you have to...
Little Dickie Bales says,
“I’m ready to serve!”
Why is something that goes off
really smooth called like “clock
work?” Who originated this?
Ever see a “mug shot” of
someone? Why is someone’s face
called a “mug?’
Who started calling knives and
forks “flat ware?”
How can one be a “fuss bud-
get?” What is that?
When did robbers start calling
the act of checking things out at
the scene of an intended robbery
“casing the joint?”
