Reading today's headlines and
listening to news reports most
everyone would agree that we in-
deed live in a crooked, sin infested
nation. It's not just our nation, but
the whole world. The recent
events that have once again put
our country in a war position
would verify that the above state-
ments are true. Our task of
reaching a sin filled world with the
news of our Savior seems impos-
sible, but we are chosen to be
God's messenger to everyone on
the face of the earth. "Lord, shine
in all of us so that others might
see you clearly." Open Windows

be held on the Square Sunday

ter standing committee reports,
the meeting was adjourned.

First Baptist had a good num-
ber of folks present Sunday. Prior
to Sunday School, many attended
the veterans program on the
Square. Coffee and donuts were
served and the citizens of Tenaha
were treated to a very patriotic
message from Mayor Bowers.

The Tenaha Elementary chil-
dren presented a touching
veteran's program Monday. The
children sang several songs and
praised all of the nation's veter-
ans. It's nice to know that our
youth are learning about and be-
ginning to appreciate the role that
veterans played in securing their
freedom.
Veterans Day had more
significance this year

Veterans Day is different this year.
It is different because on a beautiful
September 11 morning in New York,
our country suffered the worst civil-
ian loss of life in its histoiy. It is dif-
ferent because an equally beautiful
morning in Washington, D.C., scores
of military personnel and civilians
alike perished in a direct assault on
our military command center. And it
is different because men and women
now serving in the armed forces will
be veterans of the first war in the
twenty-first century.
Veterans Day as Armistice Day,
commemorating the end in World War
I, the "Great War" of the last century.
The Armistice—famously signed at
the eleventh hour, of the eleventh
day, of the eleventh month—brought
an end to the most horrific conflict
the world had ever seen. More than
two million American men and women
went overseas to help beat back the
Central Powers' aggression along the
Western Front. There they used and
faced new technologies: tanks, dog-
fighting airplanes, explosives, trench
warfare, poison gas. As they bravely
fought al ongside the French and Brit-
ish armies in the battlefields of The
Marne, St. Mihiel, and
MeuseArgonne, they witnessed un-
thinkable carnage.
The terrorist attacks on the World
Trade Center and the Pentagon also
inflicted damage on a scale—and the
weaponry—unthinkable before Sep-
tember 11. As the ranking member of
the Terrorism Panel of the House
Armed Services Committee, I had the
opportunity to view both sites of de-
struction firsthand. Standing before
the rubble of "Ground Zero" and the
gaping void in the Pentagon build-
ing, I was filled with a sense of sad-
ness, anger and quiet resolve.
We will need resolve above all
because we face long and difficult
struggle ahead, with an enemy
spread our across many countries,
with sophisticated technology at
their disposal. Our men and women
currently serving in Central Asia
need and deserve our strongest sup-
port. The kind of fighting they will
encounter will not be easy and will
not always know their successes.
The war may very well require im-
mense sacrifice, but we will prevail
in this struggl e to defend our way of
life, as have the generations that
have gone before us.
This struggle is about our way of
life because the terrorists who at-
tacked us made no distinction be-
tween the war front and the home
front, and they sought to destroy our
sense of freedom and security. The
federal government as well as state
and local authorities have been work-
ing tirelessly since September 11 to
prevent further attacks and to ensure
that we can again conduct normal
business. We have swiftly mustered
resources and personnel necessary
to shore up our defenses at every
possible point—at airports, hospi-
tals, energy facilities, schools, roads
and bridges and post offices. Civil-
ians were the first casualties of this
war, and in many ways they are on
the front lines of this second front.
As we are united in out support of
our soldiers bravely fighting over-
seas, so we are called upon to be vigi-
lant at home against possible treats.
To commemorate the service of all
veterans, President Eisenhower in
1954 signed a Congressional resolu-
tion into the law to change Armistice
Day to Veterans Day. Our support
for veterans of the wars of the last
century--from World War I and
World War II, to Korea, Vietnam, and
the Gulf War—will set the precedent
for how we care for the veterans of
this century.

That the Germans accidently
discovered poisonous gas in the
1930's while their scientists wre
searching foar a new and im-
proved insecticide? The product
was and remains nerve gas.
There are many other horrible
gases developed with the tabun
being the first and an agent called
sarin following the development of
tabun. It is amazing that we as
human beings have the abilty to
3e so inhuman to each other.

Nine hundred, thirty-six stu-
dents took the peace officer li-
censing exam during the third fis-
cal quarter of this year. Eighty-
six percent of those want-to-be
cops are now cops as far as the
licensing part goes. Some will
have to put applications for em-
ployment in multiple locations in
an attempt to secure a cop job.
The hours will be long (new guys
normally get the midnight and
weekend shifts). Pay not very
good and the danger you never
know. May God bless each of
these new rookies and protect
them from harm.
