WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES ?
Stephen Wiggins San Augustine Church of Christ
Under the caption “Bets are
on for next Super Bowl match-
up” it is reported that bookies
are al-
ready de-
termin-
ing odds
for win-
ners of
next
year’s
game
( The
B e a u-
mont Enterprise, 2/6/07, IB).
Gambling has been around for
thousands of years and will al-
ways be promoted by the
worldly minded. This foolish-
ness saturates our society. Farm
hands to educators to leading
citizens are more than happy to
wager their money whether on
football, chicken fights, or Ca-
sino style at Bossier City. These
gamesters never stop to think
what a pathetic example of ir-
responsibility they are setting
before the young people of our
day. Nor do they seem to care.
We have come to expect this
from the spiritually weak and
materialistic minded.
But for a Christian to engage
in such a worldly activity is even
more despicable. I know several
who gamble that claim to be
God’s children. Some are em-
barrassed and try to hide it. Oth-
ers flaunt and defend their ad-
diction. They rationalize that
gambling is just innocent and
Steve Harris, pastor
Hebrews 10:12, “But this
harmless entertainment. But if
such can be shown to violate
principles of Scripture then it is
neither innocent nor harmless
regardless of how entertaining
it may be. A lap dance is enter-
taining but hardly fits the bill for
righteousness in the sight of
God. I have never met a dedi-
cated, devoted member of the
Lord’s church involve them-
selves in such worldly activity
as gambling. No, it is always
the weak and lukewarm that par-
ticipate in and defend such.
The most basic principle of
God’s truth that the sin of gam-
bling violates is that of steward-
ship. God demands that the
Christian be a “wise,” “faith-
ful,” and “good steward” of the
manifold blessings we have
been entrusted (Luke 12:42; 1
Cor. 4:2; 1 Pet. 4:10). Why not
rather use what the Lord has
given you to clothe the poor and
feed the hungry? Gambling is
just the opposite of doing for oth-
ers. It is a selfish, self-centered
waste of time, talent, and money.
It is motivated by the twisted
desire to gain something for
nothing. Like a parasite on so-
ciety it produces no personal
growth, achieves no social good,
and thrives on the corrupt
mindset of those morally bank-
rupt. “Abstain from all appear-
ance of evil” so says the Lord
(1 Thess. 5:22).

Want to lose a few pounds?
Want to feel better through bet-
ter eating habits? Want to be
able to wear all the clothes in
your closet again? If you replied
“yes” to any or all of those ques-
tions, read on.
A community-wide support
group for weight management
has begun meeting on Monday
nights at 6 PM at FUMC and
you are invited to j oin us. There
is no cost and there is nothing to
buy. The program is called
“God’s Weigh” - weight man-
agement God’s way. Our goal
is to manage our eating habits
rather than letting our eating
habits manage us.
Meetings consist of a weigh-
in time from 6 until 6:15. It is
important to weigh on an accu-
rate scale and to record weight
at least on a weekly basis.
Weigh-ins are recorded pri-
vately and kept confidential.
Weigh-in times also provide op-
portunities for fellowship and
sharing nutritious recipes which
aid in weight loss.
From 6:15 until 6:30 the
group participates in an inspira-
tional meditation or scripture
lesson for encouragement. We
listen to each other talk about the
successes or challenges faced
during the prior week. You’d
be surprised at how similar our
problems with weight manage-
ment are. It is encouraging to
know that we are not alone and
that others share similar difficul-
ties. It is also encouraging to
know that people can and have
overcome the problems which
many of us face. Success stories
are very encouraging!
Since many health problems
result from being overweight,
shedding those extra pounds can
result in better health, more en-
ergy and a more optimistic
lifestyle. Most of us know the
truth of that statement, but have
difficulty putting it into action.
We need support and encour-
agement to change our eating
and exercise patterns, and that’s
what this group is all about.
The group is open to all
people in our area who need
support and encouragement in
changing eating and exercise
habits. You do not have to be a
member of the Methodist
church (or any other church) to
attend the meetings. All you
have to be is willing ... willing
to take a positive step towards
improving your lifestyle
through better nutrition and
weight management.
Whether you wish to lose
just a few pounds ... or a lot
of pounds, “the journey of a
thousand miles begins with
just one step.” Why not take
the first step and join us next
Monday, July 2 at 6 PM at the
First United Methodist
Church, 314 Austin Street,
Timpson. Trish Hooper and I
serve as co-facilitators of this
support group. You will be
welcomed warmly and are en-
couraged to take that important
first step. Call me at
936.254.2315 if you have any
questions. We look forward to
seeing you Monday!

of the day, you might fix some-
thing cool to drink and sit down.
There is one act that is univer-
sally recognized as evidence that
a task is complete and that is
“sitting down.: Matter of fact,
that act has made its way into
our cultural language: “Don’t
just sit there - do something!” I
suppose that if someone had said
that to Jesus after His ascension,
He could have replied, “Sorry
there’s nothing left for Me to
Unlike the Old Testament
priests who had to repeat the
sacrifices for sins each year,
Jesus’ offering of Himself was
eternally effective. He had to die
only once for the sins of the
world. Therefore, He’s now
seated at the right hand of power
... WHY? Because He paid the
price for sins once and for all.
The death of Christ for your
sins is a wonderful gift of God’s
acceptance of you. If Jesus
Christ had to die again and
again, it would indeed be differ-
ent. But friend, remember that
the price He paid was sufficient,
allowing Him to say, “It is fin-
ished. ”
If you ever doubt, picture
Jesus seated at the right hand of
power. If the Father considers
Christ’s work finished, so should
you. Loraine Boettner said, “The
saints in heaven are happier but
no more secure than are true be-
lievers here in this world.”
