Tenaha mayor reports
“City is going good”
By Clark Partin
The Tenaha Businessmen
met last Thursday in the
WhistleStop. President Marie
Crawford called the meeting to
order and Brother Odom gave
the opening prayer.
Mayor Bowers reported
that the city was going good
and the final paper work was
not finished on the purchase of
the old bank on Hwy 59.
The fire dept, had worked
one car accident, but no fires.
Bo Morris reported the tear-
ing down of the Tenaha High
School was near completion
and no administrators would
be at the school this week.
We were also reminded of
the July 4th program at the
football field. I hope everyone
was able to attend and had a
great time.
Summer is here and we
hope everyone is having a great
summer. We have been so
thankful in receiving rain dur-
ing June and the temperatures
have not reached 100 as of yet.
The meeting was adjourned.

Talented voices entertain the audience at
Sonny Tippett Memorial Gospel Singing
By Pat Crawford
The annual Sonny Tippett
Memorial Gospel singing was
held on Thursday evening in
the Timpson High School au-
ditorium. Mr. Bill Smith, a
member of the Calvary Boys
Quartet, served as master of
ceremonies for the occasion.
Mrs. Patty Wood, Timpson
Chamber of Commerce, intro-
duced the 2007 Frontier Day
Queen, Miss Mallory Strahan,
who welcomed the crowd to the
gospel singing. Master of cer-
emonies, Mr. Bill Smith, intro-
duced Mrs. Beverly Tippett
and her son Clint to the crowd.
Beverly is still a supporter of
the singing that her late hus-
band loved so well. No one
loved gospel singing like
Sonny Tippett. Mr. Smith and
District attorney Lynda Kay
Russell told jokes in honor of
Sonny. Sonny loved a good
joke just as he enjoyed his gos-
pel music. Ms. Russell and her
band The Country Gentlemen
performed good gospel songs
that the crowd enjoyed. Lynda
Kay graciously shares her tal-
ent throughout the county.
Timpson native, David Pate,
followed Lynda Kay with a
number of gospel songs. David
has a beautiful voice and sang
many songs that were audience
favorites. David and Debra
had two very special guests
with them, their two beautiful
grandaughters who belong to
Kenna and Jason. The famous
Calvary Boys from Tenaha
took the stage after David.
They are such a talented, pro-
fessional quartet who has re-
ally made a name for them-
selves and have put Tenaha on
the map. They also wowed the
audience with their talented
voices. Finally, the younger
version of the group finished
out the night with their inimi-
table style of singing. It is so
refreshing to see the younger
generation continuing this tra-
dition that is so loved and ap-
preciated in our area. Sonny
would be so proud to know that
the Chamber of Commerce is
continuing to support his an-
nual Frontier Day Gospel sing-
ing. Thanks to all the perform-
ers who took the time to ring
in this year’s Frontier Day cel-
ebration.

SHELBY COUNTY
HERIFF DEPARTMEN
By Florence Reeh
The Timpson City Council
met in a special session Mon-
day, July 2 to discuss and pos-
sibly approve three items on
the agenda.
Item 1 was a discussion of
assisting the Timpson Volun-
teer Fire Department with the
purchase of a used truck and
selling the old one. A motion
was made to purchase the
truck and put the old one up
for bids. Motion carried.
Item 2 - Repair of Marcus
and Pecan Streets was dis-
cussed. Contacting the engi-
neer for consultation regarding
this repair was approved.
Item 3 was a lengthy discus-
sion of implementation of di-
rectives pertaining to the
Marshal’s office. The council
spoke to the marshal concern-
MOBILE UNIT WITH SHELBY COUNTY SHERIFF NEWTON JOHNSON AND DEPUTY MIKE
TOWNS
Shelby County Sheriff’s Command Center makes debut
ing several points in the direc-
tive such as being visible in the
town. His main duties are to
the City of Timpson. Also,
making the council aware of
any problems so an ordinance
could be established to im-
prove and enhance his job. See
to the things that need doing
and abiding by rules of the job
and a show a performance
record. A written report of
things done was stressed by the
council. The showing of favor-
itism was mentioned and said
to be forbidden.
Mayor Pro-tem Ronnie
Wolfe was adament concern-
ing getting in gear and doing
the things that needed to be
done in our town. “Forget the
past and let’s go from here. Get
busy and do the things we need
to do.” All agreed. Meeting
closed.
By Lynn Alexander
Sheriff Newton Johnson and
Lieutenant Mike Towns
manned the Command Center
during Timpson’s Frontier
Days festivities. The Mobile
Trailer will be used by the
Sheriff’s Office as a focal cen-
ter for direction and commu-
nication among various agen-
cies during searches, disaster
relief or any other operations
where it would be advanta-
geous to have on site facilities.
The Center is a mobile home
with several rooms, a bath-
room and kitchen facilities.
Currently it is equipped with a
computer, television, fax and
radios. The Trailer and all
equipment contained within
has been obtained without the
use of any tax funds. The Com-
mand Center also allows the
Sheriff’s Office to have a
highly visible presence at pub-
lic functions. Examples of the
visible presence occurred dur-
ing Frontier Days when lost
children were reunited with
parents and band-aids were
needed, the Command Center
was a “good” thing. The rooms
in the Command Center also
allow personnel to have face-
to-face meetings in the field in
a much better environment
than a car or over the bed of a
pickup. Since there are many
“dead spots” in Shelby County
and cellular telephone cover-
age is nonexistant, Sheriff
Johnson is looking for a com-
munications satellite to provide
telephone and internet connec-
tivity wherever the Command
Center is deployed in the
county. This satellite capabil-
ity will allow the Command
Center to coordinate searches
among personnel using
handheld Global Positioning
System (GPS) units to make
sure all areas are covered and
there is no duplication of cov-
erage. The GPS units and
Computer Mapping Software
will allow search areas to be
printed out by precise coordi-
nates enabling an efficient
search effort.
Sheriff Johnson spent time
searching for donations for the
center and equipment. Several
businesses and private citizens
have given generously. None of
this has cost the tax paying citi-
zens of the county anything.
The Sheriff’s Office has been
the beneficiary of several ges-
tures by public-spirited citizens
such as The Daigles of Joaquin
purchasing a Kawasaki
“Mule” and Trailer. Wulf Out-
