WHAT SAITH THE SCRIPTURES ?
Stephen Wiggins
Several years ago I was in
school with another preacher stu-
dent. In casual conversation one
day he said to me, “I don’t read
debate
books be-
cause I
don’t
want to
have to
make a
d e c i -
sion.” I
consid-
ered that
a strange
and urn- usual
statement coming from a would-
be gospel preacher. What he
meant was that he did not want
the burden of having to decide
between matters of right and
wrong, truth and error.
Then why read the Bible?
Jesus often debated the propo-
nents of error. So did the proph-
ets like Elijah when he debated

the false prophets of Baal. There
were also preachers like Stephen
who disputed with the unbeliev-
ing Jews. I wonder if my friend
ever tries to persuade anyone in
his preaching to forsake false
doctrine or a life of sin and ac-
cept the truth. If so, does he ex-
pect his audience to listen and
make the right decision? Strange
indeed is the preacher who sup-
poses man does not possesses
both the obligation and privilege
to make the right decision be-
tween right and wrong. Reality
stipulates that we are in a spiri-
tual battle against the devil. The
very fact that sin exists compels
us to be decisive, to make a
choice and to make the right
choice. Satan wants every per-
son in hell with him. One of the
ways in which he seeks to take
people with him is through the
art of deception. The devil uses
false doctrine to deceive people
into thinking they are right with
God. It is the truth ot the gos-
pel that sets man free from the
shackles of sin, not error (Jno.
8:31-32). One does not acci-
dentally obey the truth and live
a life of faithfulness. It is im-
possible to be a faithful Chris-
tian without using discrimina-
tion by determining and choos-
ing right from wrong. The per-
son who supposes he can escape
this responsibility is woefully
deceived. God wants preachers
of the gospel to preach the
“whole counsel of God” while
simultaneously exposing the
false religious doctrines of our
day.
God wants sin unmasked
and laid bare. We now live in a
society which is saturated with
post-modernistic thinking. This
is the philosophy that truth re-
ally is not objective. Is doesn’t
matter what one believes as long
as he is sincere. And the cardi-
nal sin is to assert that anyone
is wrong religiously. This is ag-
nosticism in a new dress. God
gave us our minds and the pow-
ers of reasoning ability that we
might be decisive regarding the
course of our lives. Don’t shirk
that responsibility. God will
hold accountable the one who
decides not to.

of a sexual revolution. Let me
spell it out for you as clearly as I
can. It is to abstain from sex un-
til marriage, and then wed and
be faithful to an uninfected part-
ner. This was the concept that
was endorsed in society before
the 1960’s. But our society had
a better idea. And now the bet-
ter idea threatens the entire hu-
man family! Your teenagers
could be victims if they don’t un-
derstand the importance of this
message.
I think we again find wisdom
from the pages of the Holy Bible:
IThessalonians4:l-8, “Finally
then, brethren, we urge and ex-
vessel in sanctification and
honor; not in passion of lust,
like the Gentiles who do not
know God; that no one should
take advantage of and defraud
his brother in this matter; be-
cause the Lord is the avenger
of all such, as we also fore-
warned you and testified. For
God did not call us to unclean-
ness, but in holiness. There-
fore he who rejects this does
not reject man, but God, who
has also given us His Holy
Spirit”
Please remember to pray for
our nation, our president and his
administration and the teenag-
lives in Tenaha near the Tennes-
see Community and she is an
artist who has studied under
some of the most respected art-
ists who paint God’s winged
creations.Hummingbirds and
moths are Vickie’s specialty, but
she also paints exotic animals
and wildlife. We are fortunate
to have this gifted lady in our
community and we are even
more fortunate to have her as our
teacher. She is talented both in
painting and in teaching novices
to paint. If you are interested in
one fun afternoon a month, you
are welcome to call our church
and reserve a place in one of
Vickie’s classes. The telephone
number for our church is
936.254.3428 and you may
leave a message on the recorder.
We’ll contact you to talk about
details.

ginner feel good about her ef-
forts.
I’m one of the beginners who
had to have extra help from time
to time to get the right technique
of brush-holding or “feather-
ing” the colors together... or re-
working and covering a mistake.
But thanks to Vickie, my project
turned out o.k. The completed
art work is on display in my
kitchen and I like the way it
looks. When I look at the project,
I think of Vickie and I feel good.
She helped me complete the
project and she was there to
coach me through the times when
I needed help. I couldn’t have
done it without her.
On Sunday May 27 our
church celebrates Pentecost Sun-
day- the birth of the church and
the coming of the Holy Spirit.
As I read our lectionary text
from the Gospel of John, I was
reminded that Vickie modeled
some of the characteristics of the
Holy Spirit in the lives of believ-
ers. Vickie was there to help us;
I have said to you.” The Holy
Spirit encourages, equips and
enables believers to cany on the
mission of Jesus Christ in the
world. He is our advocate, our
instructor, our counselor, and
our comforter. He even convicts
us of wrong doing and guides
us toward repentance and for-
giveness if we stray outside
God’s boundaries.
Some of us require more
guidance than others, but we all
need the Spirit of God in our
lives.
God’s Spirit is freely given
to all who will ask and receive
him. Thanks to the presence and
guidance of the Holy Spirit, our
lives are transformed into the
likeness of Jesus Christ and
that’s a very good thing!

Sunday and find out more about
