Janet Barton died last night in
Tenaha. I also heard Robert
Barton was driving to Tyler
sometime yesterday to get
Kelsey and he totaled his ve-
hicle.
FEVER—My fever is still
with me after the doctor gave
me something to take for it. It
ha been a hard week, but I’ll
rest next week during the holi-
day we are taking away from
the office.
Remember we will be closed
Christmas week. So, no paper
during that time.
TENAHA— Libby Partin
came by the office today and we
Citizen’s State Bank in
Tenaha Open House enjoyed
by all.
I do love Christmas!! It is a
magical time of the year as it
reminds us of that wondrous star
that shined above, sent to tell us
of God’s love! It glowed over
Bethlehem in radiant splendor
and oh so bright.
Winking when angels came
to earth, heralding our Savior’s
birth. It brought hope for me and
you. Shepherds gazed in fright
and wise men travelled by it’s
light. I pray that wondrous star
that shone above His stall, sent
from Heaven, will shine on us
all!.
We got our sweet Donna
(Corder) Higginbotham married
the 15th and she was a beauti-
ful bride and Danny was a hand-
some groom. We have another
wedding coming up this week-
end and it should be a grand af-
fair.
Jim and Karen Nix (Karen
not quite a Nix yet but soon). I
know Kay is so proud of her
sons and she should be. Gwinith
Tyer, grandmother, is certainly
proud as well.
I don’t know if many of you
know where my Mama Bates
lived but it’s not far from
me..left at the Corinth Church
and make a few jogs and you are
there. I loved that old dirt road
and especially when we came
for the holidays. Everyone was
there, lots of noise, eating and
playing with cousins. My Great
Grandma Terry was a little bitty
lady and only at Christmas time
her treat was to smoke a ciga-
rette in a long holder and drink
a little glass of peach
brandy...now I am not recom-
mending this to any of you but I
loved her so much and it was
great fun to see her sitting there
in “Grandeaur” with her brandy
and cigarette. She was about 4
foot tall but she could outrun
Bobbie Woodfin and I with a
switch in her hand when we
acted up. That did not happen
often—Bobbie said she got a
whipping every day that
Grandma could catch her.
We also had a great Aunt Jo
and Uncle Jim Johnson who
never had children. He brought
his fiddle and we sat on the
porch and sang. Aunt Jo would
let us go through her old trunks
and look at her pretties when we
visited. Her beds were real high
feather mattresses and we
weren’t allowed on them...I
would dream about running and
jumping right in the middle but
then I would wake up and think
better of it.
A friend from Crockett ,
Bonnie McKelvy Cadwell sent
the following to me.. .1 love it and
hope you do too.

is doing pretty good since los-
ing her dad, Clark. She has been
working hard and keeping busy.
PAGEANT— Nancy saw
Jessica Strahan at the Little
Miss Merry Christmas pageant.
She is looking so beautiful. She
and Mallory look so much alike
it’s almost scary. They are two
really sweet young ladies.
TIMPSON— Someone
else looking good too. Beverly
Tippett is really looking very
pretty and healthy these days.
She had a hard bout will illness
recently but has overcome the
whole ordeal. Keep it up,
Beverly. Also Pat Crawford is
shaping up these days. She said
she is eating healthier and boy
does it show. These two are re-
ally making us look like we
need to work out or something.

ily, I’m just another cook
If I work at the soup kitchen,
carol in the nursing home, and
give all that I have to charity, but
do not show love to my family,
it profits me nothing.
If I trim the spruce with shim-
mering angels and crocheted
snowflakes, attend a myriad of
holiday parties and sing in the
choir’s cantata, but do not focus
on Christ, I have missed the
point.
Love stops the cooking to hug
the child. Love sets aside deco-
rating to kiss the husband. Love
is kind, though harried and tired.
Love doesn’t envy another’s
home that has coordinated
Christmas china and table lin-
ens. Love doesn’t yell at the kids
to get out of the way, but is
thankful they are there to be in
the way. Love doesn’t give only
to those who are able to give in
return but rejoices in giving to
those who can’t.
Love bears all things, be-
lieves all things, hopes all
things, endures all things. Love
never fails. Video games will
break, pearl necklaces will be
lost, golf clubs will rust. But giv-
ing the gift of love will endure.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!
I especially would like to
wish Doug and Florence Reeh,
Lynn and Nancy Alexander for
continuing to publish our local
newspaper. It brings lots of joy
and news to all our people. Have
the best Christmas ever.

and attempted to spike it, but due
to safety concerns, could not get
it with spikes. The chase contin-
ued to Nacogdoches where the
Police Department got involved
on the Loop at Westwood Drive.
One deputy was able to desploy
the spike strips and deflated the
right front tire. A short time later,
the vehicle came to a stop on a
grassy median and the driver
was taken into custody. His
name is Jeremy Edwards, a 27-
year-old male from Logansport.
He was arrested on the scene
charged with felony evading ar-
rest. De Soto Parish is holding
lim for stolen vehicle.
JUST CURIOUS!

Exactly what does is mean
to be “on time?”
Ever been “flat broke?”
How broke it that?
A friend told me he was just
“give out! ” Ever heard that?
How healthy is “fit as a
fiddle?”
Ever see anyone “horse
around?”
Where is “round about?”
***
How do you “hang on?”
Ever been called “nosey?’

Look who’s happiest at the Citizen’s Bank in Tenaha last
week. Ever seen anything as cute as this?
Bobby Goff and the NFL
I first became interested in
Pro-football in 1964. Our high
school band director was taking
two of my friends and me to
watch the Dallas Cowboys play
the Saint Louis Cardinals, at the
Cotton Bowl in Dallas.
At band practice he could be
the toughest SOB in town. Get
him away from school however,
and he became one of us. It al-
ways amazed me how he would
transform from drill-sergeant
into clown.
He was a huge NFL fan. This
was partially due because his
boyhood friend and classmate
had made it to the Pros and was
playing for the Green Bay Pack-
ers.
Bobby Goff had been a stand
out high school musician while
Max McGee was High School
All-American. He had several
stories about Max, and would
tell them often. My favorite is
when he told of the mutual re-
spect they had for one another’s
talents.
Mr. Goff enjoyed most
sports, but football was his fa-
vorite. He followed High
School games, especially during
playoffs. At the college level he
pulled for the Longhorns, and
made-up stories about when he
played quarterback at SMU.
That day in Dallas however,
it was Pro-time, and he was tak-
ing three ’’knuckleheads,” as he
liked to call us, to see our first
NFL game.
The three of us had never
seen a stadium that big or a foot-
ball field so small. The red and
white dots were playing the blue
and silver dots, and the red and
white dots won. This was big-
time football, and we were
hooked.
I recall several details about
that day: Hot dogs were selling
for the outrageous price of fifty-
cents, there was a sign on the
stadium ramp that read “Capac-
ity 75,504” and, I remember
laughing.
It’s unlikely three band stu-
dents and their director would
ever experience such a day at a
football game.
Over the years, Bobby Goff
was one of the most awarded
high school band directors in
Texas. Max McGee became a
football legend and would score
the first touchdown in Super
Bowl history. The world lost
Bobby a few years back, and
Max a short while ago. Pro
Football is still around, as are
three “knuckleheads” from
Timpson that once shared a Dal-
las Sunday with Bobby Goff and
the NFL.
