By Nancy Ritch
A Timpson business was
robbed Monday evening at ap-
proximately 4 p.m. According to
Timpson City Marshal Fred
Walker, the perpetrator, a black
male, entered the front door of
Timpson Texaco which is located
at the intersection of Hwy. 59 and
Flwy. 84, and after looking around
made no purchase and went to the
door as to leave. He then went
back and ask the clerk, Jeanie
Ford, for the key to the restroom.
After she had given him the key,
he turned back from the door
again, went behind the counter
and held a gun to her head while
demanding she give him all the
money. Ford, who was on the
phone with her sister, immediately
gave him the money, and her sis-
ter contacted the emergency ser-
vices.
The robber told Ford that she
needed to go outside with him, but
a car approaching the station
made him nervous and he fled
alone in a charcoal colored car on
Hwy. 84 toward Mt. Enterprise.
Shelby County Sheriff James
Moore heard the report made to
emergency services and the dis-
patchers immediately notified the
surrounding counties with a de-
scription of the fleeing culprit.
The actor turned onto FM1970,
traveled toward Clayton in Panola
County where he ran a stop sign
at the intersection of 1970 and
Hwy. 315. DPS Officer Shawn
Baker pursued the vehicle and
soon after the chase, the actor
pulled the vehicle over, ran into the
woods and jumped into a pond,
where he disposed of the hand
gun. Trooper Baker realizing his
description fit the one from Shelby
County, placed 45 year old
Kawanis Renee Hicks of
Carthage under arrest for fleeing
and evading a peace officer. Hicks
was then brought back to
Hanson’s Timpson Texaco for
positive identification by Mrs.
Ford.
While Hicks remains in the
Panola County jail until he has
satisfied their court, a warrant for
his arrest in Shelby County is in
process and he will be transferred
to face the robbery charges.
Charles Moore was recently
awarded the Vocational Agricul-
ture Teachers Association of
Texas Distinguished Service
Award for 25 years of service to
agricultural science and educa-
tion.
This award is designed to com-
mend individuals who are dedi-
cated and supportive of agricul-
tural education in Texas. Moore,
a teacher at Timpson High School,
was presented the award during
the Agriculture Teachers' Profes-
sional Development Conference
on Wednesday, August 1,2001 in
Corpus Christi.
"This year’s conference fo-
cused on the necessity for agri-
culture education to join forces
with other academic programs,"
stated J. Don Barnett, president
of the Vocational Agriculture
Teachers Association of Texas.
"As we continue to improve pub-
lic education in our state it is im-
perative that agriculture education
keep abreast of current student
trends and that our teachers work
with school administrators to en-
sure that students are afforded
that best possible courses that will
positively affect their futures," said
Barnett.
In Texas, there are over 1,500
agricultural science and technol-
ogy teachers that impact over
108,000 students who are enrolled
in agricultural education classes at
the secondary level. The Voca-
tional Agriculture Teachers Asso-
ciation of Texas is headquartered
in Austin and aims to improve
agriculture by teaching.

Dry conditions cause wild
fire watch for East Texans
The Texas Forest Service re-
ports that East Texas wildfires are
increasing in number and size, as
hot, dry weather persists across
much of the region. Agency offi-
cials attribute the increase to rap-
idly drying vegetation and the fail-
ure of people to realize how rap-
idly fire conditions are escalating.
Summer heat is drying vegeta-
tion and increasing its flammabil-
ity, and people aren’t taking the
outdoor fire safety precautions
warranted. It is noted that most
East Texas wildfires result from
carelessness, primarily connected
with burning trash, brush piles and
other debris.

Congressman Jim Turner will
visit Tenaha and Timpson High
Schools during his month-long tour
of public high schools throughout
East Texas later this summer.
Along the tour, Turner will speak
with students, teachers, and par-
ents about how to make a first
class education a reality for ev-
ery child in East Texas.
"It seems that up in Washing-
ton, everyone wants to offer their
solution to improving our schools,
but they never sit down and listen
to the students and teachers," ex-
plained Congressman Turner.
During the tour, students will be
encouraged to share their thoughts
and their questions with Congress-
man Turner.
"I'll be there to answer their
questions and hear their comments
and concerns," said Turner. "I'll
also be meeting with teachers
across the district. I want to know
if they feel they have the tools
and training they need to do their
job. Our teachers are profession-
als and we should give them the
respect and support they de-
serve."
On the tour, Congressman
Turner will meet with students
studying government, civics, and
US History, as well as with teach-
ers and interested parents.
The tour of public schools in his
district is the latest of Congress-
man Turner's annual tours across
East Texas. In addition to his regu-
lar travels throughout the 19 East
Texas counties that make up his
congressional district, Turner em-
barks on a tour every summer vis-
iting form 30-70 communities over
the length of several weeks to
hear directly from constituents
about issues important to them.
Last year, Turner visit pharmacies
to speak with senior citizens about

scription drug prices.
"The only way to represent
folks as their Congressman is to
listen to what's important to them
and then do your best to be their
voice in Washington," explained
Turner after announcing the tour.
"There is nothing more important
than giving our children a first-
class education, and I intend to
continue to work hard to make that
happen."
