Two men have expressed an
interest in being appointed as
constable of Precinct 1 to fill
the unexpired term of O. C
(Tex) Akard, who died unex-
pectedly last Friday.
County Judge L. E. Gold-
smith said that Alton Mitchell
of Sulphur Springs has con-
tacted him personally about
the job. He also said that
Jim Wells had called in to in-
quire about the position.
Judge Goldsmith said he ex-
pected t h e Commissioners
Court, which will make the ap-
pointment, to talk about Ril-
ing the vacancy Monday.
Mitchell finished in second
place in the iiiree-man Demo-
cratic race for constable in
Precinct 1, which covers all
of Sulphur Springs and im-
mediate vicinity. He lost out
in a run-off race with Con-
stable Akard, 1,471 to 1,146.
Wells, who currently oper-
ates a neighborhood grocery
store in Sulphur Springs, ran
third in a five-man race for
Hopkins County Sheriff, trail-
ing John E. (Junior) Tittle
and Olen Gillean. Tittle won
in the run-off and immedi-
ately assumed the office to
which he was formally elect-
ed in November.
The 4-H Club entered the
food show last week in Sul-
phur Springs. Gina Domer
and Mark) Moore each won
blue ribbons and ReConna
Coffman won a red ribbon,
with their entries.
James K. and June Bass-
ham spent the past weekend
in Nashville, Tenn., attending
the "Grand (Me Opry,’’ and
Music Hall of Fame.
Katherine Stephens of Gar-
land visited Putt and Ger-
trude Bassham Sunday.
Elsie Whorten and Aleen
Skeen spent Sunday visiting
Mrs. Whorten’s son, Bert, in
Sulphur Springs.
