them minimum wage for their
work.
Thanks to the volunteers, most
of whom are retirement age or
older, the program has not only
stayed afloat, but survived to
thrive and serve 100 to 115 peo-
ple a day five days a week, 80 to
100 of which are delivered daily
and about 50 which are delivered
on holidays.
Hawkins-McClure said that the
fact that Meal-A-Day usually
serves fewer people on the holi-
day is by no means a deterrent
or discouragement for volun-
teers. Fewer people requiring
meals that day is a good indicator
that program recipients are
spending the day with their fami-
lies and friends.
“Not having anyone to cele-
brate with on the holidays can be
depressing," she said. “By being
open on holidays, they get a meal
brought to them and by someone
who cares. I think that’s especial-
ly nice on holidays."
Hawkins-McClure said the
only area the Meal-A-Day pro-
gram needs assistance is drivers.
“We need volunteer drivers to
deliver meals on three days:
Monday, Wednesday and Fri-
day," she said. ’We’ll have some
that are having to leave the pro-
gram for [health] or personal rea-
sons, so we’ll need someone to
drive those days."
