Lady Lions whip Cougars, 54-49
By LINDA JACOBS
Sports Writer
CROSBY-It went down to the
final quarter of play before the
Livingston Lady Lions could lay
claim to a 54-49 victory over the
Crosby Lady Cougars in the fust
game of round two of District 19-
4A action.
A previous 19 point victory over
Crosby earlier in the year meant
nothing as Crosby battled
Livingston on their home court
head to head throughout, including
a 40-40 deadlock at the start of the
forth quarter,
Free throw shooting made the
difference as Livingston connected
on 22-of-34 attempts compared to
Crosby’s 8-of-13 attempts. “Free
throw percentage was the story of
the game. Foul trouble hurt us but
their foul trouble hurt them more,”
said Livingston coach Sandy Gil-
bert.
“We were taking the ball to the
post and were getting fouled on the '
shot and getting a 2-shot foul. We
were fouling them in the backcourt
and they were only getting a one
and one. They didn’t get as many
and it was enough to keep us in the
ballgame,” said Gilbert.
foul trouble started early for
Crosby when their leading scorer,
Jill Wotchesik had three in the first
half. She sat out most of the second
quarter and then fouled out of the
game with 5:07 left in the fourth.
“The inside game is not their
pme,” said Gilbert “Worchesik
is their game.”
Despite the early exit Worchesik
still managed to lead her Crosby
teammates with 17 points. “Wor-
chesik is the story of their team,”
stated Gilbert. “She’s got a beauti-
ful jump shot and it's just hard to
defend.”
The Lady Cougars also found
Julie Babbs and Cindy Mitcham
equally hard to defend. Babbs
finished the night high point with
21 and Mitcham tallied 16. Babbs
hit 4 field goals, one 3-pointer and
sank 10-of-16 free throws while
Mitcham hit five field goals and
connected 6-of-7 at the line.
Mitcham was held considerably
lower than her previous 37 points
against Crosby in round one but did
an excellent job rebounding. “Cin-
dy had a really rough night hitting

had a bye on Friday and did not
play. Only two games are
scheduled in Lion gym Tuesday.
The JV’s play at 4:30 p.m. and the
varsity will tip-off at 6:00 pm.
The Lady Indians have been
romping and stomping through the
season as well as the majority of
the District 19-4A schedule. The
Lady Indians scored over 100
points against both Dayton and
New Caney.
Cleveland defeated Livingston in
round one by a 10 point margin,
56-46. The Lady Indians had three
to hit double digits, led by Temika
Mitchell’s 23 points. Cleveland,
however, has many weapons to
throw at their opponent Natonya
Walker, who only scored three
against Livingston in the first meet-
ing, leads the Houston area hi scor-
ing, hitting mostly from the 3-point
range. At last count she had over 70
3-pointers. She was not a factor in
the first game when she scored only
three points. Julie Young was
guarding Walker and took the 3-
point shot away.
It will take a super effort from
each Lady Lion that hits the court
against Cleveland, but that’s exact-
ly what Coach Gilbert is depending
on. “We're going to go at them full
court man to man,” said Gilbert.
“That’s the plan. I think I made a
mistake in die last game not pres-
suring them more early on. We
pressured them at the end and it
worked. They’re real hard to play
full court pressure man to man for
32 minutes, just because of the way
they play, they’re so aggressive,
but we’re going to try to match up
with them,” Gilbert said.
Other Games ‘
Oak Ridge and Willis were win-
ners Friday night to remain in the
hunt for a potential playoff spot
They are both tied with 4-3 district
