mighty big plays turned the tide for
Corrigan-Camden as the Bulldogs
rolled to a 30-14 win over the Diboll
Lumberjacks.
The Bulldogs of Coach Jim Skin-
ner (5-1-0) scored 22 points in.the se-
cond quarter, paving the way for
victory in the District 22-3A opener.
Kevin Morris scored the first
touchdown on a 1-yard run, then
Ryan Burris cushioned Corrigan’s
lead to 14-0 when he picked off a
Diboll pass and darted 47 yards for
another score.
Diboll answered with a touchdown
on an interception to cut the lead in
half with 1:53 left in the second, but
Corrigan came right back with one
of the biggest plays of the game.
From the Diboll 39, quarterback
James Hall pitched a high spiral
down the sideline to Deon Walker.
Walker made a spectacular diving,
fingertip catch near the goal line.
The momentum of the running catch
landed Walker in the end zone for the
touchdown. “That was a great
catch,” James Hall said following
the game. “I’m glad he’s fast. He
had to run the pass down. It fired us
up after he caught that pass.”
Coach Skinner was excited about
the play as well. “It was a good one!
Perfect pass and great catch by
Deon. He finally ran a route and
didn’t slow down,” grinning as he
said it, since Walker was one of
several players outside the dressing
room within ear range. Walker
answered with a big grin of his own.
Walker finished the game with three
receptions for a total of 90 yards.
Leading Rusher
The ace in the backfield for Cor-
rigan was Kevin Morris, who not on-
ly scored the first TD, but added the
last Corrigan score as well. He rush-
ed 22 times for a net of 174 yards and
scored on touchdown runs of 1 and 30
yards.
The all-state tailback has a total of
752 yards rushing and 10 TD’s this
season.
Jeff Brown also enjoyed his time
in the backfield. He rushed for 67
yards on nine trips, including a 40
yard run late in the game. Brown is
also a threat on kickoff returns. He
returned two against the ’Jacks for
60 yards.
The ’Dogs finished the night
rushing for 250 yards on 51 attempts.
Quarterback James Hall not only
hit the 39-yard TD pass to Walker,
but sent two more his way. He hit
Walker with a 40 yard pass and

another for an 11 yard gain. Steven
Skinner also tallied one pass to Jeff
Brown for nine yards. All total, the
'Dogs completed 4-of-8 for 99 yards.
Tough Start
The two teams bucked heads in
first, battling through a scoreless
quarter. The ’Dogs fumbled on their
opening drive, then after forcing the
’Jacks to punt, the Bulldogs were
charged with a 5-yard roughing the
kicker penalty, which extended
Diboll’s drive. Later in the quarter,
the ’Jacks stopped another Bulldog
drive on fourth down.
“Diboll’s got some good talent,”
commented Skinner. “They’re big. I
knew it wasn’t going to a pushover
when we came up here. We had to
play ball. I’m just happy to win, but
I’m just awfully dissappointed in the
way we're going about winning, too
many penalties and illegal pro-
cedures....We’ve got to be more
disciplined that that. We’re going to
work on it.”
The penalties still remain a nagg-
ing problem for the ’Dogs. They
were flagged 13 times and backed up
96 yards. Charlie Jackson had it the
roughest. Two of his longest runs of
the game were called back on
holding penalties. One was a
15-yarder, the other a 10 yard
touchdown run.
Defense
The Corrigan defense has steadily
gone about their business week in
and week out. The ’Dogs limited the
Diboll offense to 61 yards rushing on
36 attempts and held their passing
game to 35 yards on 4-of-16 passes.
The defense featured several big
plays during the game. Linebacker
Ryan Burris played a superb game.
He returned an interception 47 yards
for a touchdown, boosting the 'Dogs
to a 14-0 lead, then later in the game
recovered a fumble. He also teamed
with Jamie Hulett on a quarterback
sack and was one of the leading
tacklers.
Hulett was in on several tackles
and also sacked the Diboll quarter-
back twice. Deon Walker added help
on one quarterback sack.
Kevin Morris defended the pass
exceptionally well, plus picked up
his first interception of the year.
“Hardest hit of the night award”
should go to Tracy Robbins, who was
in on several big tackles, including a
flattening crunch on QB Werlan
Guilliory midway in the fourth
quarter.
Other hard-nose defensive plays
were made by Steven White, Ricky
Havard, James Hall, Charlie
Jackson, Alvin Thompson, Cedric
Spears, Freddie Rouse, Luis San-
chez and Jeff Brown.
Coach Skinner said overall, he
thought the whole team played good.
“I thought Ryan Burris did a real
good job on defense tonight, and our
offensive line did a good job con-
sidering being outweighed on the
line. I’m real happy for the kids.
They played hard and deserved to
win it.”
