Jerry 110-111-191 570, Lonnie 19U04-145/54S,
James Nelson 451, Lynn and Ricky 430’s
jumped out to a 27-9 first period lead
en route to a 75-49 Area playoff vic-
tory over the Big Sandy Lady
Wildcats.
The 5-foot-9 senior post hit the nets
for a game-high 25 points and grabb-
ed 10 rebounds in leading the Lady
Rebels past a young, up-and coming
Lady Wildcat team.
The Lady Wildcats end the year as
District 49A co-champions with Leg-
gett. Both teams tied with identical
5-1 district marks, but Big Sandy
defeated Leggett in a one-game
playoff to earn the top spot.
The Lady Pirates were nipped
40-36 by Centerville in first round
playoff action, while the Lady-
Wildcats posted a 59-28 victory over
Apple Springs for the bi-district title.
Area Game
Against the Lady Rebels,
freshman Alicia Gilchrease and
sophomore Terri Williams tied for
high-point honors. The pair manag-
ed to notch 14 points each against the
much taller I^ady Rebel squad.
Janice Thompson and Makesha
Morris added eight and four points
respectively, while both Trecia
Richardson and Betsy Stafford
scored two points each. Jolynn
Langley added one free throw.
The Lady Wildcats hit 12 field
goals, four 3-pointers (two each by
Janice Thompson and Terri
Williams) and connected on 13-of-20
free throws for their 49 point total.
Evadale
The District 48-A Lady Rebels,
27-3 for the year, will now advance to
the Regional playoffs in Kilgore.
The Lady Rebels not only have
Shellee Gilbert to pin their hopes on,
but several other top-notch cagers
as well. Mandy and Brandi Burrell
both scored double figures for the
Lady Rebels, hitting for 15 and 10
points respectively, while Pam
Whitmire and Cheryl Baumann add-
ed eight and six points each in the
winning cause.
Though the Lady Rebels have an
overall balanced offensive attack,
Gilbert has managed to lead the
team in several statistical areas this
year. The three-year starter
averages 18.7 points and 12.7 re-
bounds per game. She also has 109
steals, 56 assists and 31 blocked
shots to her credit.
Scoring
A high-shooting percentage in the
first quarter netted the Lady Rebels
a solid 27-9 lead in the first eight
minutes of the game. From then on,
it was an uphill battle for the Lady
Wildcats.
The Lady Rebels outscored Big
Sandy in both the second and third
quarters (19-14,17-9) to take a com-
manding 63-32 lead into the final
quarter.
The lady Wildcats came out
ahead in the fourth by a 17*12 scoring
margin for the final, 75-49.

Red drum
CORPUS CHRISTI - Fishery
biologists say it’s not conclusive, but
the survival of North Carolina-strain
red drum in a hatchery pond here
during the Christmas freeze may in-
dicate the Eastern Seaboard fish
may have more tolerance for cold
than Texas redfish.
While all the North Carolina fish
survived, every Texas-strain fish in
an adjacent overwintering pond
died.
Gene McCarty, assistant hatchery
chief for the Texas Parks and
Wildlife Department, said the North
Carolina fish were brought to the
GCCA-CPL Marine Development
Center to determine their tolerance
for cold. Red drum, like several
other species, are subject to mortali-
ty when sudden cold spells drop bay
temperatures rapidly.
“Although two ponds of fish don’t
constitute the type of scientific
evidence required for conclusions,
the results suggest there may indeed
be temperature tolerance dif-
ferences between Texas and North
Carolina red drum,” McCarty said.
SCORE BY QUARTERS

Sumrall will tip-off in M-district ac-
tion against the Latexo Tigers on
Friday, Feb. 23 at Huntsville High

coached by former Big Sandy
Wildcat, James Richardson.
Lake Tawakoni
AUSTIN - The Texas Parks and
Wildlife Commission has approved a
master plan for Lake Tawakoni
State Park, located in Hunt County
about 50 miles east of Dallas.
“The park will serve the Dallas
area, providing overnight camping,
swimming, fishing, boating and pic-
nicking in a prime East Texas loca-
tion," said Wilson E. Dolman, direc-
tor of the Parks Division.
The 401-acre park includes 5.2
miles of shoreline along the south
shore of Lake Tawakoni in an area of
gently sloping hills wooded with oak,
hickory and elm trees. An occa-
sional bald eagle has been seen in
the area and the park will Include
hiking trails and nature study oppor-
tunities.
“Our plans call for a double-sized
boat ramp, a fishcleaning shelter
and a fishing frier since the lake pro-
vides excellent fishing in the small
coves where vegetation was left In
place for fish habitat," Dolman said.
