RUSK - The steam powered
'exas State Railroad will again take
0- mile round trips between Rusk
ind Palestine when the spring
ieason begins March 24, according
o Texas Parks and Wildlife Depart*
nent officials.
Last year the excursion trains
were forced to make shorter trips
after spring floods washed out sec-
tions of track. Repairs have been
completed, and the trains will again
be making the scenic 25-mile runs
through the East Texas Pineywoods.
rura-of-the-century style depots
provide the experience of times past
is visitors climb aboard the four-
hour trip.
“Spring is an especially scenic
time to ride the train,” said Park
Superintendent Curtis Pruett. “The
dogwoods and other plants usually
are blooming and the Pineywoods
are beautiful.” Pruett said
moonlight trips will be an extra at-
traction during April and May.
The train makes weekend trips
between depots until Memorial Day
(May 28), when it starts running five
days a week from Thursday through
Monday. In the fall, it again
operates on Saturday and Sunday
only until closing for the winter in
November.
A train departs from each depot at
11 a.m., stops for a lunch break at
the opposite depot and then returns
to the departure point by 3 p.m.
Moonlight runs will leave the Rusk
depot at 6 p.m. Engine cab tours are
offered before the 11 a.m. departure.
The railroad originated in 1896
when the state prison system began
construction on the track as part of a
plan to support the state’s iron
works at Rusk with rail transports to
Palestine.
Advance reservations are recom-
mended during the spring when the
old steamers are completely booked
on weekends. Although the trains
run more frequently during the sum-
mer season, it is advisable to have
reserved seating since a busy season
is expected.
Reservation will be taken beginn-
ing Feb. 1, and prospective visitors
in Texas can call toll-free
1- 800-442-8951. Callers from out of
state should dial (214) 683-2563. The
office is open seven days a week bet-
ween 8 a.m. and 5 p.m.
