GOODRICH--Pre-
registration for
kindergarten for the 1961-82
school year is set May 4-8,
from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. each
day.
Parents must bring a cer-
tified copy of their child’s
birth certificate and updated
immunization (shot) record.
To be enrolled in
kindergarten, a child must
be 5 years of age on or before
Sept 1,1981.
Services for retired
Houston Police Department
Inspector Otto H. Vahldiek,
Jr. was held at 11 a.m.
Thursday in Queen of Peace
Catholic Church, 3011
Telephone Road.
Bahldiek, 66, who served
33 years with HPD, died
Monday at his Liberty Coun-
ty horite in Rye.
A graduate of HPD’s first
academy class in 1939, he
served in almost every divi-
sion before being promoted
to inspector in 1961 by then
Chief Carl Shuptrine. The in-
spector’s rank, with HPD no
longer uses, was the
equivalent of deputy chief.
Vahldiek retired from the
force in 1972. Son Robert is a
16-year veteran of the
department.
Rosary will be recited at 7
tonight in Forest Park
Lawndale Funeral Chapel.
Vahldiek leaves his wife,
Mariana; three sons,
William and Robert of
Houston and Richard of Liv-
ingston; a sister, Mrs.
Elizabeth Gray of Dew; a
brother, Paul of Bacliff; and
seven grandchildren.
Burial was in Garden of
Gethsemani.

CORRIGAN - Funeral
services for Lois Susan Sterl-
ing, 86, of Chopin, La. were
held Thursday from the Cor-
rigan Funeral Home Chapel
with the Rev. Andrew
Fogelman officiating. Inter-
ment followed in Friendship
Cemetery.
Survivors include four
daughters, Mrs. Frankie
Troutman of Livingston,
Eunice Wakefield of Ace and
Ella Herrington and Wanda
Johnson, both of Chopin,
La.; one son, Iverson A.
Sterling of Jasper; nine
grandchildren and 20 great
grandchildren.
Mrs. Sterling, who lived in
Baytown for 60 years prior to
moving to Louisiana, was a
member of the Baptist
church. She married the late
Alvah F. Sterling in 1915.
She died Tuesday in Nat-
chitoches Parrish Hospital
in Natchitoches, La. Serving
as pallbearers at the funeral
were Jim Sterling, Jr., Kyle
Sterling, Charles Sterling,
Buddy Sterling, and Luther
Frank Sterling. Ron Sterling
served as honorary
pallbearer.

LIVINGSTON - Funeral
services for Mrs. R.B.
(Edna) Shofner, 87, of Liv-
ingston were held Sunday,
April 19 from the Gibson
Funeral Home Chapel in
Lufkin. Burial was in Hun-
tington Cemetery.
Mrs, Shofner was born
Aug. 19,1894 and died Feb. 17
in Livingston Memorial
Hospital following an ex-
tended illness. A former resi-
dent of Huntington, she

nieces and nephews.

been designated May Day
Festival in Goodrich, with
activities beginning at 5:30
p.m.
The festival will include a
spook house and water dunk-
ing station, with Charles
Abel, principal, Everett
Lawson, school board presi-
dent; and Sam McDonald,
acting administrator, on the
dunker.
Barbecue will be served
from 5:30 to 7- p.m. The
Future Farmers of America
will sell cakes all day and
other organizations, in-
cluding the PTA, Beta Club
and Cheerleaders will have
booths.
McDonald said the public
is invited.

Darrell Longino (right), president of the Goodrich Lions Gab, presents n $560 check to Goodrich
High School Principal Charles Abel for the Goodrich Community Scholarship Fund. Scholarships
will be awarded on the basis of need by a seven-member committee consisting of Abel, represen-
tatives from the Lions Club and the Goodrich PTA and faculty members. Lions serving on the
committee include Longino and Eddie Brooks. Winners of the scholarships will be announced dur-
ing graduation ceremonies. The scholarship fund, which has also received some private dona-
tions, now contains $1,500 - enough for three $500 scholarships. The students will receive $250 the
first semester and $250 the second semester.

clergy changes in the Easl
Texas Vicariate of the
Roman Catholic Church, ef-
fective May 27.
Rev. Thomas E. Phelan,
associate pastor at St.
Elizabeth parish in Port
Neches, has been named
pastor of Sacred Heart
parish in Nacogdoches and
Immaculate Conception Mis-
sion at Moral.
Rev. Phelan is a native of
Beaumont and studied for
the priesthood at St. Mary’s
Seminary in Houston. He
was ordained a priest in 1976
in St. Anne’s Church in Beau-
mont. He first served at St.
Mary’s Church in Orange,
then in St. Joseph’s Church
in Port Arthur. He was nam-
ed associate at St.
Elizabeth’s parish June 1,
1978.
Rev. Earl D. Mudd, pastor
of Our Lady of the Pines
Church in Woodville, has
been named pastor of Infant
Jesus parish in Lumberton
and of Our Lady of Victory
Mission at Sour Lake.'He is a
native of Groves and was or-
dained in 1960. After serving
in several parishes, in 1974,
he was named fulltime direc-
tor of communications for
the Beaumont Diocese and in
1975 was made director of
the Diocesan Catholic Youth
Organization (CYO). He
became pastor of Our Lady
of the Pines in 1978, serving
also in Livingston.
