“I was always fascinated
by outboard motors-ever
since I was a kid,” says W.
E. “Dub” Whitmire, who
with his wife Peggy, is owner
of Carlise Marine between
Onalaska and Trinity on
HWY 356. “Those engines
are made like a fine watch.
They’re different and much
more intricate than a car’s
engine.”
Carlisle Marine is housed
in a 32 X 50 ft building which
includes shop, showroom
and service desk, opened for
business April of 1982. Mr.
Whitmire has the Evinrudc
dealership here and
specializes in the repair of
both Evinrude and Johnson
outboard motors. He sells
both new and used out-
boards, as well as products

Boats for fishermen like

well as paddles, boat bat-
teries and other items are
also sold at the store.
A full year’s warranty is
available on all new motors,
which range in size from 2 to
235 horsepower. “I also
guarantee the quality of my
work and repairs,” adds
W.E. Whitmire.
W. E. and his wife Peggy
have an interesting and
adventurous life. Raised in
East Texas, he joined the
navy during WWII. After the
war, he decided to travel to
Alaska, (“I had itchin’ feet”,
he says) where he became a
locomotive fireman for the
Alaska railroad. He met his
present wife Peggy there
and they married in 1948.
Later he returned to Texas.
In 1963, he and Peggy ended
up in Houston, Texas where
they lived for app. 10 years.
W. E. .worked for the
Houston Chronicle and Post,
as well as other newspapers

beauty of Alaska lured him

on the pipeline for about five
years. After he was hurt on
the job, W.E. decided to
move to Carlise and change
careers. He began a year’s
training in outboard motor
repair at the OMC factory in
Dallas. His on-the-job-
training included working
for Riverside Marine, “real
good people,” he says.
W.E. began building the
attractive wood building that
housed Carlise Marine last
year. Besides being the
“best mechanic around”, his
skills include carpentry,
electrical and plumbing
work.
Peggy Whitmire, vice-
president of Carlise Marine,
Inc., is originally from Will
Roger’s home town in
Oklahoma
“My grandmother sang with
Gene Autry,” she tells us.
And since she knew all the
old songs and traditions,
Peggy’s grandmother was
made advisor to the movie
version of Oklahoma!
Peggy, who at one time
worked as tape puncher on
the Galveston News, has
recently acquired a new
hobby-playing the piano.

the Carlisle Marine, she also
enjoys bowling, sewing and
crocheting. The Whitmires
are the parents of three
grown children: a son and
two daughters, and the
grandparents of seven
children.
W.E. especially enjoys
“meeting and talking to peo-
ple, and trying to help them
out with their problems.” He
adds, “I also like the relative
sense of freedom of having
my own business, as well as
working with motors.”
The Whitmires feel strong-
ly that “this is the sweetest
part of Texas. There are
some of the best people in the
world who live right here.”
He explains, “You have
everything here. Water,
fishing, woods, good
neighbors...”
He also feels that there is
“sufficient business too sup-
port all dealers in the area.”
To all would-be customers,
the Whitmires say, “Come
see us-you’ll be sure to get a
fair shake.”
The store is open 7 days a
