Veteran organizations
HANDLING PAINT ON CANVAS — Guest demonstrations
are a regular feature of monthly meetings of the Livingston
Art League.
For veterans <:f our armed forces,
there are four organizations in Polk
County: the American Legion post at
Livingston, two Veterans of Foreign
Wars posts and a chapter of Disabled
Veterans.
These groups suppoort their respec-
tive communities and the county with
a variety of projects and programs, in
addition to enjoying the social ex-
change their members give each other.

Livingston is located at 917 W.
Church — for the time being — and
meetings arc held on the second and
fourth Monday of each month at 6

from young children to those in the
50’s and 60’s. Activities range from
walking to racing.
They hold a monthly club run and
also sponsor various community runs,
including a track meet for youths up to
12-years-old. the group also par-
ticipates in a number of civic events.

Veterans do not have to have served
overseas to be a member, but must
have served in active military service
during World War I, World War II,
the Korean War or the Vietnam War.

VETERANS OF FOREIGN WARS
To be eligible to join the VFW, you
have to be a veterans who served over-
seas or outside the U.S. in time of war,
be eligible for a campaign medal and
to have served overseas in time of
conflict
LIVINGSTON VFW
This organization of veterans meets
at 7:30 p.m. the first and third Monday
of each month at the VFW Hall on
U.S. 59 just north of Livingston. On
the third or fifth Monday, a covered
dish supper is served in a joint meet-
ing of the VFW and the VFW
Auxiliary. Dues arc $14 per year, and
their is a $15 initiation fee for a new
member.
The present commander is Everett
Parker, 327-8859. The number at the
hall is 327-9119.
CORRIGAN VFW
Metings are held in the VFW Hall
in Corrigan on the second Thursday of
the month at 7:30 p.m. Dues are $15
yearly. The present commander is
Buddy Purvis. The number at the hall
is 398-7718.
The VFW Auxiliary at corrigan
meets at the same times.

DISABLED VETERANS CHAP-
TER 24
If you are an honorably discharged
veteran of the U.S. armed forces, you
may be eligible for membership in this
growing veterans organization. Those
who are disabled are automatically
elegible.

Another program benefits senior
citizens of the community, especially
those in nursing homes and shut ins.
The Citizens Senior PAL program
provide programs at the nursing
homes and the senior citizens centers
at Livingston and Onalaska. These
may be on video tape that
are locally done to bring to those who
cannot get out to special community
events such as the annual Pine Cone
Festival, parades, etc. Speakers and
lecturers also give programs. An im-
portant part of the project are
programs provided by groups of stu-
dents form the primary and elementary
schools.
They also coordinate the schools
scholarship and outstanding graduate
program, and other programs involv-
ing communmity participation. This
past year they coordinated various
special actifity weeks. For example, a
patriotism week that coincided with
Pearl Harbor Day, a drug awareness
week, UIL week, retired teachers
recognition week, martin Luther King
Jr. Week, Texas Public School Week,
~and an end-Of-the-schoot-year recog-
nition of student and campus volun-
teers.
They have initiated a new adult
reader program, designed to teach
adults how to read through one-on-one
volunteer tutors.
