lawn chairs, according to the offense
report. The burglary is believed to
have occurred sometime between
August, 1985 and the date reported.
The missing items were valued at an
estimated $4,290, according to
sheriff’s reports.
Joe H. Smith reported May 25 the
burglary of J&D Grocery on FM 1988
in Goodrich. Items reported missing
include a .243 caliber Remington
semi-automatic rifle with scope, a
Dan Wesson .357 revolver, a .410
gauge Stevens single-barrel
shotgun, and money from a cash
box. Darrell Longino is the in-
vestigating officer.
Harrell Green of Shelter Cove
reported Sunday the theft of a Sears
- Die-Hard battery from a boat patt-
ed near his residence. Capt. Chuck
Staton is the investigating officer.
Officers are also investigating the
theft of two hi-rise jacks, chains,
bummers and a come-a-long from a
pickup truck belonging to Albert
Munn of Onalaska. The items were
taken while the truck was parked on
lots Munn was clearing in Leisure
Woods off FM 356 North.

the items reported missing from the
mobile home.
Burglars also entered a storage
shed at the residence, taking a Sears
Two Livingston men
office on U.S. 190 East. Robbins is
the investigating officer.
Also under investigation is a
burglary of a weekend residence in
Shelter Cove, reported May 25 by
Frank Taylor of Houston. Kitchen
Voters choose Doolittle
as SHL representative
LIVINGSTON - Two Livingston
men have been charged with
burglary of a habitation in connec-
tion with the burglary May 10 of the
Carl S. Bland residence in Goodrich.
Charged are Lloyd Brown, 21, and
Gary Brown, 19. Both are being held
under $50,000 bonds set by Precinct 1
Justice of the Peace Mary Placker.
A television set and video cassette
recorder believed taken in the
burglary were recovered with the
arrests
The suspects, who were arrested
last Thursday, may be involved in
other burglaries and investigation is
continuing by both the sheriff’s of-
fice and Ijvingston Police Depart-
ment, said Sheriff’s Department Lt
Dennis Clifton.
Also believed cleared is the May 13
burglary of the Bow McClesky
residence in Putnam's landing
Charged in the burglary is Ronald
Sumner, 22, who was arrested by
Houston police May 14 in possession
of property stolen from Polk County,
according to sheriff's reports.
A Cedar Point resident, arrested
for driving while intoxicated Sunday
night, is also facing charges in con-
nection with several thefts, accor-
ding to Sheriff Ted Everitt
The suspect. Barry Campbell, had
a lawn mower in the back of his
truck when he was stopped Sunday
which proved to have been stolen
from Walker County. Everitt said
Walker County has burglary war-
rants against Campbell and the
suspect also faces a DWI and theft
charge from Polk County, according
to the sheriff.
Vandals strike
Vandals caused extensive damage
to equipment and property in
Precinct 4 Monday night. Someone
took a bucket loader parked off Soda
Loop east, tore down several gates
along the road, damaged the road,
and ran off into a gravel pit, accor-
ding to sheriffs reports. They also
apparently tried to overturn a coun-
ty bulldozer, damaging the equip-
ment.
Precinct 4 Commissioner Paul
Harrell estimated the damage at
$15-$20,000.
Other eases under investigation
include the theft of two tool boxes
with tools, an 18-inch pipe wrench,
come-a-long, and welding equip-
ment from a storage van belonging
to Caldwell Tanks Inc at the site of a
water tower construction project in
Onalaska. The burglary was
reported May 28 and was in-
vestigated by Sgt J C. Robbins
A 110-volt Citation air conditioner.
Royal electric typewriter, Sharp and
Texas Instruments calculators, a
Gold Star microwave oven and an
extension cord were reported miss-
ing May 25 following a burglary at
the East-Tex Lumber Co. business
IJVINGSTON - Robert Doolittle
of Onalaska will be joining 112 other
elders in Austin this October for the
first Silver Haired legislature of
Texas.
Doolittle, 66, carried the three-
county District 2 in the SHL election
last Friday with a total of 430 votes.
He recieved 447 votes in Polk Coun-
ty, 25 votes in Jasper County and
eight votes in Tyler County.
A 1937 graduate of Livingston High
School, Doolittle attended Kilgore
Junior College and Sain Houston
State Teachers College. He then
served four years in the U.S. Air
Force, and gained the rank of
sargeant.
In 1943, Doolittle married Juanita
Lumpkin. They have four children.

Doolittle is also a member of the
State Committee on Silver Haired
legislature, the Boy Scouts, the
Chamber of Commerce, the
Onalaska Sesquicentennial Commit-
tee, the Polk County Historical Com-
mission. the Polk County DETCOG
Advisory Council and the Onalaska
United Methodist Church
Besides his military service.
Doolittle also worked for Texaco,
Southern Pacific Railroad, Liv-
ingston Drug, Cochran's Clothing
and as a telegram delivery person.
Doolittle has seven grandchildren.
In the first election of the SHL,
more people voted in Polk County
than any other East TExas County
except Houston County Polk County
had 502 voters, while 729 seniors
voted in Houston County
In Jasper County. 137 people voted
and in Tyler County. 277 voted.
Throughout District 2. Jane
Reynolds received 303 votes. Colum-
bus Butler received 25 , Franc is Hill
pot 99 and Arthur Pettijohn got nine.
Created by the State Legislature
in 1985, the SHL’s purpose is to give
older Texans the opportunity to
learn about how laws are made by
getting involved in the process.
It will consist of 112 people age 60
or over, elected by people at least 60
years old.
Four representatives, including
Doolittle, from the 12-county Deep
East Texas region will go to the SHL
in October. The region is divided into
four districts. Polk County is in
District 2 along with Jasper and
Tyler counties.
Some of the issues to be disussed
during the SHL this fall include
utilities for people on fixed incomes,
health care and housing, said Molly
IiOcke, election judge for Polk Coun-
ty.
The SHL, scheduled for Sept. 28
through Oct. 1, will closely resemble
a session of the Texas Legislature,
although no laws will be passed.
At the end of the session, the
members will select several priority
issues, which will be presented to the
Texas legislature.
