FACTS ON THE ALLIED DEBTS
Although America through her
representatives at Washington, ha-*
not exactly cancelled the debts of the
war-time allies, this country has, in
effect, served to materially reduce
them, and, in seeking to base pay- i
ments or^l'ie ability of each debtor
nation towpay, has given different
terms to each.
Italy owes America a little more
than 82,000,000,000. But what Italy j
has agreed to try and pay over a !
period of 62 years is worth today
but 820,000 000. Americans are pay-;
ing 4 1-2 per '?nt interest on all for
eign war debts, and 4 1-2 per cans !
on 520 million dollars, for 62 years
would equal what Italy has agreed to
try and pay.
Italy, therefore, is paying a littic
more than one-fourth of her total;
debt, and Americans are payirg
three-fourths.
On the same basis France’s offer
amounts to but four-tenths of th?
total debt; Belgium, 46 per cent, an l
Great Britain, 76 per cent. |
American taxpayers are paying 2 ['
per cent of Britain’s debt, 54 per J
eent of France’s debt, and about 75 ]
per cent of Italy’f; providing 'he j
terms of each agreement are carrie !

out to the letter.
In this way many of the billion.:*
of dollars which European nation*;
owe Americans are being paid by
Americans.
The debts are only being cancelled
in part, and in no part as far as
American citizens are concerned.—

Unfortunate Genius
One of the greatest female geniuses
of the early Nineteenth century was
Louise Braehman, who was born In
Reel)lit/., Germany, in 1778. She was
an intimate friend of Schiller and
Novalis and was herself a writer and
poet of great ability. In tier ease, as
In many others, genius brought with
it an unevenness of temperament, at
times bordering on insanity, with long
and continued tits of melancholy.
Having been disappointed in two love
affairs, the blasting of another fond
hope of hers In 1N22 drove her to
suicide by drowning in the River
Saale.—Chicago Journal.
