Dots And Dashes
Still Her Dish
MEMPHIS. Tenn (UP*. - To
most persons, the beep of Morse
Code is a meaningless jumble
hid to a woman in Memphis, it
is like the clang of a bell to an
old fire horse.
\nd 7P ve.ir old Pai-y Mit
chell recently showed she still
is as skilled as ever with the
dots and dashes
The Mid-South Centennial Fair
featured the replica ol an old
village, complete with a tele-
graph key from 1856. ‘‘Miss
1 Daisy" was on hand to operate
the centry old device. Crowds
stopped to stare when she "jerk-
ed lightning," as tapping out
Morse Codes was called in the
old days. She* worked the key
a> fast that the dots and dashes
1 sounded like a steady drone
Miss Daisy developed her skill
60 years ago. She decided to be-
come a telegraph oprator, but
not because Morse Code was her1
: first love. Her real interest at
that lime was men.
“Mainly 1 wanted to b«* near
the boys," she said "and they
were in a class learning to be-
come operators.”
By the time the course was
over. Miss Daisy could run the
wires as well as any of the boys.
“ She wen! on to become an ex-
pert at handling all kinds of
wires—news messages for radio
stations and newspapers. West-
ern Union messages, race track
results, sports and market copy.
She believes copying cotton
quotations was the hardest job
of all.
"Getting out a steady stream
, of figures, fractions and sym-
bols was like sitting on a h 0 t
stove and trying to hold still,"
i she said.

Furrier "Paints"
In Mink, Ermine
DETROIT—(UP)—The furrier
who designed the moulton car-
peting in Cadillac’s most luxur-
ious model copies paintings in
fur as a hobby
His avocation is not as fuzzy
as it sounds
Robert T. Roberts the man
who put fur beneath milady's
feet, uses scraps of ermine and
Somali leopard to fashion repro-
ductions of famous paintings
He works with an assortment
of flat furs, alternating them
with softer rabbit and fluffy
mouton to provide a three-dim-
ensional effect
Robert has the* painting photo
stated. Then he cuts patterns
corresponding to each shape i
tree trunk, a barn's roof, a bull
fighter's cape. Using the paper
pattern as a guide, and a regular
furrier's knife, lie cuts the shape*
from fur and glues it to canvas
The first fur-reproduction to
emerge from Roberts' studio wu-
a copy of "White* Barn .t paint
ing by the American artist. Gent
goia O' Keeffe. The burn is cut
out of white ermine and the root
is black Alaska seal
