Flu Epidemic
Kills Eighty
In Phillippines
By UNITED PRESS
A flu epidemic is reported to
have killed 80 persons in the
Phillippines.
The Manila health officer said
60,000 cases have been report-
ed in the Phillippine capital-
alone—with 62 deaths there as
of last night.
Court proceedings virtually
stopped in Manila because more
than half of the city’s judges
and court employees have come
down with flu. However, the
health officer said the epidemic
appears to be easing.
Flu epidemics also hit Indo-
nesia and formed authorities to
close schools in Northern Su-
matra. However, no deaths have
been reported so far. The
Army’s Walter Reed Medical
Center in Washington announ-
ced last night that American
scientists working around the
clock for five days succeeded in
isolating the Far Eastern flu
virus. They sent samples of the
new strain to American manu-
factuers of flu vaccine.
