Unemployment Rate
Drops to 4.2 Pet.
Gaines County saw it's lowest
unemployment rate of the 2013
calender year during the month
of October, according to the latest
figures from the Texas Workforce
Commission.
In TWC figures released late last
week Gaines County boasted a
4.2-percent jobless rate for October,
which was down from a 4.7-per-
cent rate seen in September and
a 4.8-percent rate seen in August.
Gaines’ rate, which is among some
of the lowest in the State of Texas,
was similar to a 4.1-percent rate re-
ported for October 2012, according
to TWC information.
"It's another good sign for our local
economy," said Shelby Conco-
telli, President/CEO of the Seminole
Area Chamber of Commerce. "It
can also be considered a double-
edged sword, because while we
have a low unemployment rate, we
still have a lot of businesses that are
bolting to fill vacancies."
Gaines County, for the month of
October, had a labor force of 7,964
persons, of which 7,633 were classi-
fied as being employed. In Septem-
ber, Gaines County reported 7,950
persons for the local labor force, of

Friday" holiday deals in what is widely considered the "first official" shopping day of the Christmas season. According to Walmart corporate officials on Friday morning, the world's
largest retailer processed more than 10 million registertransactionsfrom 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. Thanksgiving evening.
Retail Coach: Seminole Prime for Business Growth
By Dustin Wright
Sentinel Managing Editor
In a roughly 30-minute pre-
sentation before members of the
Seminole Economic Development
Corporation, Aaron Farmer identi-
fied three "current" needs for the
Seminole community — casual, sit
down eateries, more clothing retailer
options, and more grocery options.
Farmer, vice president of The
Retail Coach, a national retail recruit-
ment and development consulting
firm, voiced his assessment of the
community following a brief visit to
Seminole on Nov. 18, as well as with
past studies of the community.
"You have a lot of things hap-
pening within your community,"
said Farmer, who's presentation
to the SEDC not only served as a
sales pitch for the business' consult-
ing services, but as brief insight of
an outsider's view of local needs.
"However, from my brief assess-
ment, I feel your community is way
under served, especially in those
three areas."
"The traffic you have coming into
and out of this town is remarkable,"
said Farmer. 'You take that, along

this area with the oil boom and your
unique situation in steady growth
with the German community, you
have a lot of positive things going
for you that regional and national
retailers like to see when searching
for new locations."
Mike Tolleson, Executive Director
of the Seminole EDC, agreed with
Farmer's comments regarding the
"under service" of the local com-

munity, and said the corporation
is actively looking to address those
needs.
'We have a tremendous amount
of potential here with our local
economy, which is why we as a
board are bolting into this kind of re-
cruitment assistance," said Tolleson
of Monday's presentation.
Tolleson, who has been in the
Seminole community as the head
of the EDC since July, stated the
local community is under served
and under counted in many de-
mographics, which has hampered
the recruitment process with some
business ventures.
Tolleson, on Thursday, said the
SEDC Board plans to meet in their
December 18 regular meeting with
representatives from The Buxton
Group, a Fort Worth-based recruit-
ment/development firm which
assisted the corporation in the early
2000s with a retail development/
recruitment analysis.
'We are working toward a plan to
address the (retail/economic) needs
of our community, and this could
