Handley named Funeral Director of the Year
ARLINGTON - The Texas'Fu-
neral Directors Association
(TFDA) presented Adrian Handley
with the Funeral Director of the
Year award on Thursday, June 15,
at their 120th annual TFDA Con-
vention held in Arlington. Handley
was also selected as Funeral Direc-
tor of the Year for the Southeast
Texas Funeral Directors Associa-
tion this past year.
Upon graduation from Texas
A&M in 1974, Handley worked as
a journeyman lineman at Fisk Elec-
tric Contract Service. He was later
elevated to a helicopter lineman.
In 1976 he began working for
Clement Wilcox Funeral Home in
Burnet and did his apprenticeship
at Heartfield Funeral Home in

Services in Houston, Handley re-
ceived his funeral director’s li-
cense.
In 1981 he bought Fort Stockton
Funeral Home. Handley served as
chairman of the Water Carnival
building committee for five years.
He is past president of the Fort
Stockton Chamber of Commerce
and was very instrumental in get-
ting the restoration of the Old Fort
site restored.
In 1990 Handley moved to

Citizens Police Academy
scheduled to begin July 6
LIVINGSTON - Strengthening
the relationship between the
Livingston Police Department and
the citizens it serves and informing
Citizens of public safety issues are
two of the goals of a five-week
Citizens Police Academy the de-
partment will host beginning July
6.
Anc -iicr goal is to provide infor-
mation so that citizens may make
informed decisions concerning
their police department and its
policies and procedures.
Topics to be covered include
training, communications, criminal
investigations, gangs, drugs and
firearm safety. Emphasis will be
placed on the patrol division be-
cause it is the division with which
the public has the most contact.
Classes will be held from 6-9
p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays at the
Livingston City Hall and will con-
tinue July 6 through Aug. 3.
The class is free and is open to
anyone who lives or works in the
LivingstotVPolk County area and is
at least 21 years old. Selection will
be made from written applications.
Applications may be picked up at
the Livingston Police Department.

Cochran Funeral Home and has
been there since that time.
Handley has been a very active
member of the TFDA. He has
served on the Programs and Educa-
tion Committee since its inception
and co-chaired the Convention
Committee for 2004. He has also
served in the Bylaws, Budget, Me-
dia Relations, Membership and
TFDA PAC committees. Handley
is a past member of the TDFA’s
Board of Directors and presently
served on the TFDA Services, Inc.
Board of Directors.
Handley was made a master Ma-
son in Burnet Lodge No. 14 in
1979 and commander of Alpine
Commandery in 1985. He was
honored with a life membership by
Fort Stockton Lodge No. 1022. In

LIVINGSTON - Angelina Col-
lege registration for the local
Summer II session will be held
from 4-6:30 p.m. this Thursday in
the Livingston High School library.
1986 he became the district deputy
grand master of the 57th Masonic
of the Grand Lodge of Texas.
Handley received the degree of
KCCH from the Scottish Rite Con-
sistency Valley of Austin. In 1987
Handley was honored as the ap-
pointee to grand junior deacon for
Grand Master J.P. Vogel.
Handley was the scheduling sec-
retary and co-chairman of the
Grand Masters Regional Confer-
ence, where he helped with the
building of a model of King Solo-
mon’s Temple, which is still on
display in the Grand Lodge Mu-
seum today, and was honored with
the appointment to grand senior
deacon for Grand Master Graham
Childress.
Handley designed numerous
grand masters coins and was later
honored in 1986 by being asked to
design the Sesquicentennial Plate
for the Grand Lodge of Texas by
Grand Master Jack Kelly.
Handley has been married for 11
years to his wife, Rose. They have
six children, Adrena Jo, Stacey
Lee, Charlotte, Ray, Kathleen and
Angie; nine grandchildren and one
Bassett hound named Andy.

In old business, commissioners
will consider approval of bridge
repair at Lime Branch Bridge in
Precinct 3 under the criteria set out
by the county’s bridge re-
pair/replacement policy.
Other items on the agenda in-
clude approval of the personnel
action forms, schedule ot bills ana
minutes of the June 13 meeting.
The meeting will begin at 10 a.m.
Tuesday in the commissioners^
courtroom on the third floor of the
Polk County Courthouse.
Following the completion of
other business, the court will recess
and reconvene in executive session
at 1:30 p.m. to consider appoint-
ment of a veterans’ service officer.
Commissioners will return to open
session to take any necessary ac-
tion.

Private receives wings
LIVINGSTON - Funeral ser-
vices for Marion Pridgen, 84, of
Humble were held Friday, June 23,
2006, at Pace Funeral Home, with
the Rev. David Busby Sr. officiat-
ing. Interment followed in Mt.
Rose Cemetery.
Mr. Pridgen died Wednesday,
June 21, in Humble.
He was bom Dec. 12, 1921. He
was preceded in death by his wife,
Frances Darlene Pridgen; father
and mother, Clarence and Adderie
Anderson Pridgen and daughter,
Frances Darlene Pridgen.
Survivors include his daughter,
Margret Ann Jennrgs; son, James
Pridgen and wife Debbie; sisters,
Mildred Hamilton and Pauline
Mize; brother, Joe Pridgen and wife

Combat Training-as a; member of

Field Artillery Wa’rdogs Platoon on
March 17 at Fort Sill, Okla. with
high point scores and commenda-
tions as expert in grenades and ad-
vanced marksman in rifles. During
basic training his training included
mastering the use of multiple high
powered weapons and explosives.
His second milestone included
graduation from Advanced Indi-
vidual Training, or AIT, 1st Battal-
ion, 78th Field Artillery Warriors
Platoon on May 9 at Fort Sill. This
specialized training taught Sutter-
how to guide multiple can-
nons, rockets, missiles and field
artillery using computers.
Sutterfield’s duty station will be
with the 82nd Airborne Division,
Fort Bragg, N.C.
Sutterfield is a 2003 graduate on
Hardin High School and now calls
Livingston home. He is the son of
Nancy Sutterfield of Livingston
and the grandson of Oscar and
Georgia Sutterfield, also of
Livingston.

LIVINGSTON - Funeral ser-
vices for Linda Darlene Marsh, 60,
were held Friday, June 23, 2006, at
Cochran Funeral Home, with burial
following in Magnolia Cemetery in
Onalaska.
Mrs. Marsh died Tuesday, June
20, in Memorial Medical Center -
Livingston.
She was bom Dec. 7, 1945, the
daughter of J.D. and Delores Row-
ell Cox. She was preceded in death
by her father and one sister,
Delores Logan Cox.
Survivors include her mother,
Dorothy Cox; daughter, Jackie
Phelps of Livingston; son, Roy A.
Marsh III of Livingston; brother,
J.D. Cox Jr. of Brackettville; sister,
Sally Jo Sloan of Porter; grandchil-
dren, Melinda Gerhardt and Misty
Harrison and great-grandchildren,
Kylie Glasgow and Kaitlyn Harri-
son.
PORTER - John J,Jester, 81, of
Porter died on Mppday, June 19,
2006.
Mr. Foster served his country in
the U. S. Army of which he served
proudly with honor. He was a life-
time member of VI-W Post 1839,
Cleveland, and former member the
V'FW in Livingston.
Mr. Foster is survived by his
wife, JoAnn; 10 children; four
brothers; four sisters and numerous
grandchildren, great-grandchildren
and extended family and a host of
friends.
