and the first for the commercial
finfish fisherman license holders.
TPW bought and retired seven

first buyback round earlier this
year at a cost of $30,500. Bids

ful bid prices ranging from $ 1,500
to $5,000.
The limited entry programs for
the commercial crab and finfish
fisheries provide financial incen-
tive for commercial license holders
who wish to consider getting out
of the business. Licenses pur-
chased in the buyback programs
are retired and will not be replaced
until the fisheries can sustain
increased effort, according to
TPW.
Funding for the commercial li-
cense buyback program comes
from a percentage of commercial
license fees and a recently enacted
$3 surcharge to the Texas Saltwa-
ter Spun Pish Sump.-—
The buyback process for com-
mercial license holders is a reverse
bid in which license holders pro-
vide TPW the price for which they
are willing to sell their licenses
back to the department. Crab and
finfish license holders have until
Aug. 25 to submit an application
to the department to be considered
during the current round of buy-
backs. Application forms are
available from TPW law enforce-
ment and fisheries offices along
the coast.

LIBERTY—Tile Livingston
Lady Lions volleyball team got off
to a 2-0 start with-wins over Hardin
and Liberty in a tri-match Tuesday.
“They started out great,” said
Livingston head coach Beverly
Murphy.
“They looked strong and ran their
option$ in the first game against
Hardin and beat them in two.
"That’s one of the goals we’re
working on. We’re trying to just
take care of business right .off the
bat, no matter who we’re playing.”
The Lady Lions defeated Hardin
15-9, 15-1 for the quick victory.
“Liberty has been in the playoffs
for several years and they have more
exjperience of hanging in there,”
said Coach Murphy.
Despite the more experienced
Lady Panthers, Livingston ' took
care of business, 15-6, 15-13.
Coach Murphy presently has 10
players on her varsity squad. They
are, sophomore Allison McLendon;
juniors Tiffany Jackson, Vinicia
White, Kasi Wilson; and seniors
Cristin Burton, Erica Criswell,
Sabrina Ford, Desiree Ford, Paula
Murphy and Kendall Williams.
This year’s team is the most ex-
perienced and senior laden team that
Murphy has had since becoming
head coach five years ago.
“We’re trying to play more stra-
tegic, as in hitting the holes and
jump serving. They were trying to
hit holes instead of just putting the
ball over the net.
“I would say they are probably
two levels above where they were
last year, as in overall conditioning,
what they’re running and in their
overall play .”
Top players
Coach Murphy has several go-to
players this year, including Cristin
Burton, who has already committed
to play volleyball at Texas A&M.
“She’s on top of the ball,” said
Murphy. “She’s a lot more consis-
tent and she’s handling the ball;
She’s recovering too when she gets
blocked. Instead of just hitting a
wild ball she turns around and plays
smart.”
“Paula (Murphy) looks really
good,” added Coach Murphy. “She’s
pulling balls out of the net and
working hard.
“Erica (Criswell) is running any-
thing in the middle and Tiffany
(Jackson) and Vinici^t (White) are
just going up like bosses now. It’s
exciting.”
Coach Murphy has a good bench
as well. “The subs are stepping in
and doing a good job. Desiree
(Ford) and Kendall (Williams) are
both new this year. Allison
(McLendon) looked real good. She’s
got a good swing,” said Murphy.
“Everybody is doing a good job,
but we still have a ways to go if we,
want to get deep into the playoffs
this year.”
