0JG BOY WATERMELON -- Jeff Johnson of Camden is
shown with a 100-pound Big Boy Watermelon grown in his
yielded at least 35 other large
weighing in between 74 and 89 pounds. He said he hasn’t used
the land for gardening in over seven years. Instead, he used it
to feed his cattle. He has also had a huge crop of peas - they
stopped counting after 60 bushels were produced in the 3/4-acre
garden.

\ AUSTIN- Rep. Dan EUis, D-
. Livingston, reminded Texans that
.with the start of the new school
, year, it's time to slow down while
, driving and watch for children
, exiting school buses and crossing
, streets. Ellis said that Texas law-
, makers worked to improve public
, school safety and student behavior
.during the 77th Legislative session
, in Austin.
“With the growing number of
t children attending our schools,
’ increasing vehicular traffic and with
, the events which have taken place on
’ school campuses across the country,
” providing a safe learning environ-
'.jnent for our children was a top
priority for us this session, " said

HUNTSVILLE -- Auditions for
the 2001-2002 season of the
Huntsville Community Choral
Society are slated for Saturday,
Monday and Tuesday.
The choral society is under the di-
rection of Dr. Allen R. Hightower,
director of choral studies at Sam
Houston State University (SHSU).

the School Safety Center was a step
in the right direction toward provid-
ing a resource for the prevention of
youth violence and the promotion of
safety in our schools.”
The Legislature also acted to
reduce the number of false alarms
disrupting schools by strengthening
the penalties against students
involved in a fake bomb threat, fire
alarm or other terroristic threat, said
Ellis. False alarms and false reports
are a common problem that inter-
rupts numerous school days each
year, said Ellis. Every report must
be taken seriously to ensure the.
safety of students and school
personnel, explained Ellis.
Ellis went on to say that law-
makers also enacted changes to
modernize Texas' truancy laws and
more effectively deal with children
who do not attend school. Included
in the changes are requirements for
school districts to send warning
notices to parents and file truancy
complaints with courts before it gets
too late for students to be able to
make up missed work and receive
credit toward graduation, explained
Ellis.
For more information on educa-
tion issues, Ellis encourages those
interested to call his district office at

2001 Proparty Tax Rates
In POLK COUNTY
This notice concerns 2001 property tax rates for POLK COUNTY. It presents
information about three tax rates Last year's tax rate is the actual rate the taxing unit
used to determine property taxes last year. This year's effective tax rate would impose
the same total taxes as last year if you compare properties taxed in both years. This
year's rollback tax rate is the highest tax rate the taxing unit can set before taxpayers
can start tax rollback procedures. In each case these rates are found by dividing the
toul amount of taxes by the tax base (the total value of taxable property) with
adjustments as required by state lavy. The rates are given per S100 of property value
Last year's tax rate:
Last year's operating taxes
Last year's debt taxes
Last year's total taxes
Last year's tax base
Last year's total tax rate
This year's effective tax rate:
Last year’s adjusted taxes
(after subtracting taxes on lost property)
/ This year's adjusted tax base
(after subtracting value of new property)
- This year's effective tax rate
x I 03-maximum rate unless unit publishes
notices and holds hearing
This year's rollback tax rate:
Last year's adjusted operating taxes (after
subtracting taxes on lost property and adjusting for
ahv transferred Ainction, tax increment financing,
state criminal justice mandate, and/or enhanced
indigent health care expenditures)

- This year's effective operating rate
x l .08 - this year's maximum operating rate

- Rollback tax rate
Statement of Increase/Decrease
If POLK COUNTY adopts a 2001 tax rate equal to the effective tax rate of SO. 5204 per
$ i 00 of value, taxes would increase compared to 2000 taxes by S115.839.
