started the 2001 season last August with 28 returning lettermen (seven of-

The Leopards defeased Forney, 20 to 17, in the title game. Coach Valastro
is the older brother of John Valastro, who was head football coach at Cold-
spring-Onkhurst in 1999 and 2000 seasons. Both are natives of High Island
and played under Coach Scott Phillips. Tony was a member of Coach Phil-
lips’ staff at Groveton on the 1989 Class 2A championship team that
£ posted a 16-0 record. The Leopards on Friday night in the Astrodome tfe-
leased Giddings, 21 to 13, in the state Div. D semifinals. LaGrange had 42
^naming plays for 216 yards and 64 yards in the air. LaGrange's iefepse held
>Oiddings to 34 running plays for 94 yards and quarterback Derryk Blasig
compkied 10-of-21 attempts for 128 yards. Giddings defeated the Newton
Eagles on Friday night, Dec. 7 in Sam Houston State University’s Bowers
Stadium, 24 to 20, in the Region in championship game. We visited with
Coach Valastro prior to the kickoff of the Giddings and Newton game.

COACH STEVE LOCKE’S Livingston basketball Lions defeated
Willis Wildkats, 33 to 46, in Lion Country Gym Friday night. The Lions
(9-3) will be in Diboll Tueaday night for a 6:30 p.m. game. The JVs will
play at 3 p.m. and freshman game at 7 p.m. The JVs and freshmen will
play at Diboll Junior High School (the school to your right at the first
stop light in Lumberjack Country. On Thursday night, Dec. 20 the Lions
will be in Huntsville to clash with Madisonville at Sam Houston State
University’s Coliseum. Adult tickets will be $4 and students $2. The JV
game is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.; freshman at 6 p.m. and varsity at 7 p.m.
Thursday night’s game will be Coach Locke’s final game as head basket-
ball of the Lions. He announced his retirement to his players last month.
Running a few pass routes
COACH BOBBY Etheredge of Conroe High School announced his
retirement during the school's football banquet. He has been in Tiger
Country for six years. He took the Tigers to the playoffs a number of
times, including a 1999 season which saw Conroe win its first playoff
game since the 1983 season. Conch Etheredge is planning to take on an
administrative role at Conroe High School during the spring semester slatt-
ing in early January. Conroe ISD is planning to hire a new football coach
in Feb. or eviy March......-ALLEN WILSON of Tyler John Tyler
High School is the lending candidate to become the first head coach for Port
Arthur's Memorial High School. Wilson is likely to be offered the post of
athletic director and head coach shortly after a principal is hired for Memo-
rial. The announced time line on hiring a principal is Jan. 14. Coach Wil-
son is a 1974 Abilene Christian University graduate. Wilson guided Tyler
John Tyler to n 16-0 season and a 5-A Div. II state championship in 1994.
He led Paris High School to the 4A state championship in 1988. His over-
all coaching record is 136-61-2. He was 102-34-2 at John Tyler and 34-27
at Paris. Port Arthur ISD is closing down Stephen F. Austin (Class 2A),
Thomas Jefferson and Lincoln schools in May. The trio of schools will be
