TRICK OR TREAT DISPLAYS ON VIEW FOR COMMU-
NITY—Michia Benson of 1701 North Galoway Road in Leg-
gett decorates her yard and home each year with Halloween
figures and yard decor. This year she has added large inflated
figures which can be viewed on Oct. 31. “I love having some-
thing for the kids in our neighborhood to enjoy and get in the
spirit of the season,” says Benson.

Royal Brigade Band gets UIL Superior rating at contest
Superior is such a great word.
In fact, that is the word of the
year for the Royal Brigade The
school year 2004-2005 is already
almost 25 percent gone and this is
my first article of the year. We
have just been working hard to
have a good year Success makes
you proud, and right now, we have
a lot to be proud of.
On the 9th of October, the Royal
Brigade went to Cleveland for their
annual marching festival, a pre-UIL
warm-up. We earned a First Divi-
sion and were chosen as “Best in
Class" for 4A. The staff and I used
that as encouragement to push the
band a bit harder for the UIL event
this past Saturday. We went to Lit-
tle Cypress-Mauriceville High
School with a purpose - a rating of
SUPERIOR Our actual goal was
just to get better each time we per-
form, and this group of kids did just
that. We came home Saturday eve-
ning with a UIL trophy for FIRST
DIVISION (Superior), which is the
highest rating possible at this event.
That changes our goal some, be-
cause now we want to go to the
next level. That means w$ want the
same rating in the next contest.
Concert and Sight Reading, in
April. It is quite a way off, but we
need the time to work. That is not
an easy step to take, but the stu-
dents and staff of the Royal Bri-
gade will try very hard to make it
happen
It seems like just yesterday that
we were starting Band Camp 2004
over at Livingston Junior High
When we couldn't make our annual
trek to the Daniel Springs Baptist
Encampment for band camp, we
put our heads together with the
band boosters and managed to have
a pretty good week at the junior
high. A special thanks to Ken
Schmidt, our "band daddy" of the
camp, as well as his wife, Dawn,
Boo and Lea Walker, Brenda
Puckett, Theresa Gholson, (.....the
list goes on!!) They made sure the
kids had all of the meals and drinks
they needed We topped the week
with a softball game at the ball
fields and a swimming party at the
city pool. It was almost like being
“away at camp,” except we got 'o
sleet) in our own beds Thanks to a
lot of dedication, we got a tremen-
dous amount of work done at camp.
Since the opening bell, however,
it has been more than just band, and
now our kids have school work and
other activities to deal with. We
have still been able to put a suc-
cessful show on the field each
week, and with Superior ratings at
Cleveland and UIL, we are on our
way to a very successful year.
I must take this opportunity to
thank my staff for what has hap-
pened. Without them, it wouldn’t
have been this way The staff has
changed a little this year, with the
addition of our newest staff mem-
ber, Kenneth Peters. Kenneth is a
percussionist from Stephen F. Aus-
tin University and acts as assistant
director at Livingston Junior High
(LJH). He also instructs the Royal
Brigade Drumline. He is definitely
a welcome addition to the
Livingston school district. LJH
Director Steve Stevenson and Mail
Martinez, at the intermediate
school, are both back and looking
forward to a great year Matt also
functions as high school assistant,
and I have put him in charge of the
marching band this year Besides
wanting to do something different,
I decided to inject a fresh attitude
into the RB Matt brings a lot o!
experience to the game, being a
veteran of the "Drum Corps Inter
national" circuit and past champion
Santa Clara Vanguard The Royal
Brigade has really responded to his
enthusiasm, and all of us have
learned some valuable lessons
I woulj also like to thank my
color guard director, (and my won
derful wife), Judy Powell After our
girls learned the routines, she has
kept them motivated and on task Iti
my opinion, they are the best color
guard in the area
That is all tor no v, but (here is
much more to come from the Koval
Brigade If you want to help the RB
or anv other part of the band pro-
gram. come and join the Livingston
Band Boosters Right now we’re
planning our annual "Trunk or
I real Halloween alternative, and
we'd love to have you join us The
only cost is your time and dedica-
tion I ntil then come on out and
support all LHS activities, and be
sure to Keep the Beat"
