Inaccessibility to han-
dicapped persons and inade-
quate space were listed
among the reasons for buy-
ing the church building. The
aging program and nutrition
site is currently located on
Calhoun Street.
Pearson, one of the
outspoken proponents of the
program In general, said the
aging center's activities and
noon meals are designed for
all persons 60 years of age
and over. "This is not a pro-
gram for the needy," bo
said. "This is a program for
aeteor dtixens... They are a
unique group in that they all
have something in com-
mon.” One thing senior
dtixens have in common, nc-
cording to Pearson, is that
many have lost loved ones,
are lonely, and enjoy Just
having someone to talk to.
“It's a social thing,’’ Smith
said. "We need them and
they need us.”
The aging program coor-
dinator, who is known by
most of the program par-
ticipants as “Mias Virginia”,
Indicated jtbe fund raising
and the subsequent renova-
tion have been a source of
enjoyment for program par-
ticipants. "We’ve bad a lot of
fun and a whole lot of
toughs,” she said.
Pearson gave Smith, who
became the program coor-
dinator last August, much of
the credit for fueling the
■pirit of cooperation which
be said made the new coder
possible.
“I felt this Job was a real
challenge," Smith said, “tt
would take a lot to make me
leave it.”
