PAGE 2A - THE POLK COUNTY ENTERPRISE, THURSDAY, DECEMBER 21,;
Infection from catfish 'sting' claims life of fisherman
TRINITY - A Trinity area angler
who was ‘Bung* by a catfish fin in
November died earlier this month
from infections caused by the
Pese Wagner, SB, of the Pinectest
Subdivision near Trinity died Dec.
7-32 days after sustaining what at
fust appeared to be a minor punc-
ture wound caused by a sharp spine
on a catfish fin.
The uyury quickly developed into
a major, extremely aggressive infec-
tion which forced his doctors to
amputate his arm in an unsuccess-
ful effort to save his life.
’It wasn't a flesh-eating bacteria
in terms of the strep bacteria that
has been talked about so much in
the press, but it behaved very much
like one of those infections,* said
Wagner's physciaa. Dr. Steven
Farter of Conroe
‘It was a terrible, terrible infec-
tion.* he said.
Tve never seea anything like it
before. It spread very quickly and
we couldn't control it no matter
what we did,’ die doctor added.
The bacteria involved, which
Farber identified as a*nmo*as, does
not normally cause such a fast and
deadly infection but the doctor said
Wagner had other medical problems
that had weakened his immune sys-
tem, including diabetes.

■round the lake to take precautions.
‘Lake water is inherently dirty so
anytime you have an injury - no
muter how minor - and it becomes
contaminated with that water, you
need to take care.* he said.
Faiber said the wound needs to be
thoroughly cleaned and treated with
a topical antibiotic. At the first
sign of infection, people need to
immediately contact a physician.
Wagner's widow, Evelyn, said ha
husband went fishing with a neigh-
bor in early November somewhere
between Pinecrest and Riverside.
During that outing, he picked up a
catfish and was finned in the hand.
"It wasn t a senous injury. It just
barely tore the skin,* she recalled.
When ha husband returned home,
she cleaned and treated the wound
but during the night, Wagner's in-
jured hand began to swell.
"The next morning he was hurt-
ing really bad and things went from
bad to worse very, very fast," she
