Cemeteries offer history lesson
A few weeks ago. I planned an
outing to visit some old cemeteries
in our count> that I had never seen
and some that I had not been to in a
very long time 1 am not a person
who can team about our local his-
tory sitting at a computer I want to
go there Walking through old
cemeteries gives a sense of the
community, its early settlers and
their descendents who remain on
the land
For this adventure. I had an ex-
cellent guide. Mr Josh David, who
is also one of our newest County
Historical Commission members It
was a beautiful, warm afternoon
and I met Mr David at the Center
Grose Cemetery, about 10 miles
east of Leggett The community of
Center Grove was settled around
1857
The next stop was at the Beard
Cemetery, where most of Mr
David's ancestors are buried The
small cemetery is well kept and I
gained a lot of information about
the people resting there
We drove on to the Lilly Island
Cemetery It ts a beautiful old place
with huge cedar trees and well
maintained graves
The Havis Cemetery cannot be
reached without going through a
locked gate, so Mr Hint Havis was
wailing for our arrival He was well
versed regarding his family's his-
tory He showed me the location of
the Havis plantation house and
walked us through the old family
cemetery
David Hamilton had owned a
plantation in Thomas County.
Georgia He had one daughter.
Mary, and two sons He lured an
overseer named J S Havis who
after a short time, married Mary
This marriage so angered Hamil-
ton. lie and lus sons and numerous
slaves headed to Texas The Can-
non and Beard families traveled
with him
One of Hamilton's sons stay ed in
Louisiana to attend military school
Mr Hamilton, the other son and 40
slaves arrived in Polk County and
purchased 1.200 acres in the
Robertson Survey
The son in Louisiana died and
the remaining son died in 1864
while serving the Confederate
Army Only three years later. Ham-
ilton died, making his daughter
Mary the only living heir Mary
and J S Havis came to Texas live
Havis family cemetery was begun
when Mary's little daughter died
Mary 's father and brother had been
buned at the Beard Cemetery and
that seemed too far away, so
Mary 's little girl was buried in the
flower garden near the plantation
home She was the first of many
Havis bunals there It was the
Hamilton/Havis descendents who
gave the acreage for the Lilly Is-
land Cemetery for the bunal of
their slaves
We thanked Mr Hint Havis for
his time and information and drove
on to the old Cannon Cemetery,
and to the Caney Creek commu-
nity. just a few miles from the Ty-
ler County line We saw the old
Whitehead home, which received a
historical marker some years ago
We went to the Nowlin, Vincent
and Davis cemeteries The Davis
Cemetery still has the old grave
shelters We drove to the Milton
McQueen log house, built in 1856.
and finally headed back to my car
at the Center Grove Cemetery
