Stevens' stories live on
John W Stevens walked nearly
2 MX) miles back home from the
Civil War and ruined his feet for
life Stevens was a latecomer to one
of the companies dial originated in
Polk County and already in battle
w hen he enlisted
John Stevens was born Aug 10,
1832 in Hams County to Mr and
Mrs. Miles G Stevens and grew up
in what is now San Jacinto County
He moved to Grind Cane. I ibertv
County , and enlisted in Company k
in the spring of 1862. joining dial
company's retreat from Yorktown.
Va. This was the May 3 retreat
under Gen John Bankhead Ma-
gruder
Stevens was in the battle of
Seven Pines. Second Manassas, the
Maryland Campaign and the Get-
tysburg Campaign, where he was
captured on July 2. 1863 He was
exchanged the following November
at Savannah. Ga. where he liad
been imprisoned.
According to Stevens' diary. dur-
ing his imprisonment, his diet con-
sister of rats, rotten potatoes and.
sometimes, combread
He was furloughed home, but
barefooted, ragged and unshaven,
he had no way to get home except
on foot. He went to an aunt's house
in Georgia, who gave or made for
him some clothes and gave him
time to recuperate before he began

Around 1872. Stevens moved to
Hill County where he served as the
countv judge for sev eral years
After 1878 Stevens returned lo
East Texas and devoted himself lo
the Methodist ministry as a mem-
ber ol the Fast Texas Conference.
Stevens died June 23. 1919 and
is buried at Forest Hill Cemetery in
Livingston, but he left graphic de-
scriptions of his life as a Confeder-
ate soldier He recalled the |oumcv
from prison m Marx land lo the
exchange point in Georgia by

gry. some unable to stand on their
feet My weight was reduced from
222 to 141 pounds - 81 pounds of
pure Rebel flesh left behind
At the time of Stevens' death in
1919. lie was one of the oldest liv-
ing native Texans in the state, and
had seen four of the six flags of
