Age isn't everything in relationship
Dear Ann Landers: For the
past four months, I have been in a
deepening friendship with a man
who is 30 years younger than I am.
(I am divorced, in my mid-50s, and
he is in his mid-20s.)
/Tony” and I have a wonderful
timp when we’re together - talking,
walking, laughing, going to the
movies, watching football games,
eating, reading - just about every-
thing. I have no doubt that if we
weqe closer in age, we would be
talking about marriage. But that big
an age difference, especially when
the woman is the older one, makes
marriage hard to imagine.
My grandparents on both sides
lived into their 80s and 90s, and
were active until the end, so that’s
encouraging, but we can both do
the math. We realize that when
Tony is 30,1 will be 60, and when
he is 60, I will be 90. We know
that couples have problems, but
we’re worried that ours might be
more difficult than most, in spite of
our'compatibility.
! don't remember seeing any-
thing about this in any of your
columns, and I've been a faithful
fan of yours from before Tony was
boifk. I'm hoping that some of your
readers will have some insight for
us,' either positive or negative,
based on some personal experience.
-- No Name, No City, No
Suite, No Hope?
Dear No Name: Since you
have been a regular reader for years,
I am surprised you haven't seen the
many letters I have printed on this
subject. In fact, a few years ago, I
asked my female readers who had
mkrried younger men if they were
glad they did. The vast majority
sajd they couldn't be happier.
J jpranted, the age difference is a
big t>ne, but I wouldn't advise you
to! end the relationship based on
thit There are no guarantees in
relationships. You could marry a
for Tony. More and more, age is
becoming only , a number in rela-
tionships. Unless Tony wants
children, it sounds as if you two are
totally compatible, and that bodes
well for the future. I wish you luck
and many happy years together.
Dear Ann . Landers: I have
been married for two years to
"Ned," a wonderful, gentle, caring
man. We are both 47 years old.
The problem is Ned's hair. I
have a terrible time getting him to
cut it. We've had dozens of argu-
ments over this. I hope I don’t
sound too shallow, but appearance
is important to me. Ned looks so
much better when his hair is neatly
trimmed. He dresses well and is
really a good-looking man, but his
head is a mop of tight curls that has
grown so long, it is unkempt and
bushy. We were in a restaurant
recently and a waiter mistook him
for a woman. You’d think that
would have done the trick, but it
didn't. He just laughed it off.
Ned told me he dislikes going to
the barber and has had a problem
with it since he was a child. What-
ever his phobia might be, don't you
think it's time he got over it? I
have tried everything I can think of
to encourage Ned to get haircuts

regularly, but nothing works. I feel
hurt that he doesn't care enough to
look neat for his wife. Any sugges-
tions? -- Blue Indigo in Iowa
Dear Indigo in Iowa: Offer
to go with Ned to the barber "for
company," and then maybe to a
movie and dinner afterward. In other
words, make the haircut part of a
festive day (and night, too, if you
know what I mean). If all this
sounds like a bribe, so be it. I say,
whatever works.

last, I was hit in the mouth by

ire You Taking Full Advantage
f
ofYour401(k)?
£ Are you getting the most from
four 401 (k)? Many people aren’t.
? To obtain the maximum benefits
m your 401 (k) plan, you have to
two key moves. First, you
to contribute as much as you
afford. And second, you need
i invest for long-term growth,
t’s look at the issue of contri-
tions first. There are very few
hard-and-fast rules in the investment
trorld - but it almost always makes
feine to contribute as much as you
6ari afford to your 401(k). After all,
jiou generally invest in your401(k)
With pretax dollars, so the more you
gut in, the lower your annual tax bill.
Furthermore, your earnings grow on
h tax-deferred basis, which means
Jtiu’ll have more of your money
forking for you right away.
If you're lucky, your employer
ill match part - or even all - of your
)l(k) contributions, up to a certain
yel. So, if you’re not contribut-
ig enough to your 401 (k) to qualify
r the frill matching amount, you
' literally “walking away” from
ey that’s being offered to you.
that’s never a good move.
Now let’s look at the other impor-
int move you could make to reap
le greatest benefit from your
01(k): investing for long-term
rdwth.
Many people mistakenly treat
Igir 40l(k) plans as short-term in-
sstment vehicles, and they become
veriy concerned with the market's
aily and monthly price swings. As
result, when deciding which
Dl(k) options to invest in, they
iw too many dollars into very con-
:rvative chokes, such as money
larket accounts.
If you start contributing to your
401 (k) when you’re in your 20s or
30s, you’ve got several decades of
investing ahead of you. Because of
this, you may want to consider put
ting the bulk of your 401 (k) money
into growth accounts, which are
made up largely of stocks.
At first glance, that may sound like
a risky strategy, given that stocks are
more volatile than other types of in-
vestments. However, these price
fluctuations tend to smooth out over
time - so the longer you hold stock
in your 401 (k), the less likely you are
to lose money. Conversely, stocks
have historically appreciated much
more than any other type of asset
class, such as bonds, money market
accounts and government securities.
Of course, to maintain this strategy
you may have to overlook the short-
term price swings that will come your
way. Some months, you may not
want to even look at your 401(k)
statement - so don’t. Remember,
you’re not investing for next week,
next month, or next year - you’re in-
vesting for decades down the line.
As you get closer to retirement, you
may want to gradually move some
of your 401 (k) money into more con-
servative vehicles - but don’t do it
too soon. If you give you're invest-
ments the time they need to grow,
your patience may ultimately be re-
warded
